Tucked away in the busy streets of Taipan, a charming Malaysian has captured the hearts of locals with his warm smile, cute accent, and some seriously scrumptious bagels!

Gary, the owner of YODmilk.Shop has been turning heads and tickling taste buds with his RM4.80 bagels that are as delightful as his charming personality. Since this affordable gem popped up in the neighbourhood late 2023, Taipan hasn’t been the same.

YODmilk.Shop specialises in flavoured milk

While the name of the shop suggests a focus on milk, this homegrown brand is equally known for its bagels. The shop aims to bring a wave of nostalgia with its offerings, reminiscent of iconic flavours from the 1970s, particularly through its extensive range of handmade ice cream, and fresh bagels.

Yes, YODmilk.Shop is committed to providing high-quality, fresh milk products like their fruity range of flavoured milk available in 300ml recyclable bottles. One of their bestsellers is their rich Avocado Fresh Milk at RM14.80.

While fruit-flavoured milk may not be a groundbreaking concept, YODmilk.Shop sets itself apart with small-batch production, ensuring that each is made fresh daily.

Once it’s sold out, you’ll have to wait till the next day for more, guaranteeing a level of quality and freshness that mass-produced brands will find challenging to match. So, it’s recommended to drop by the store early for more milk variety.

But let’s talk about YODmilk.Shop’s bagels

While their milk is good, we think it’s the bagels that keep customers coming back to this hole-in-the-wall establishment. Despite being a fairly new menu addition, YODmilk.Shop’s freshly baked bagels have quickly become a fan favourite, and not just due to the affordable prices.

Speaking to MFT, Gary said that he intentionally priced these bagels to be budget-friendly, so that the working class can enjoy a good breakfast on a daily basis. They currently have three different bagel flavours: Original (RM4.80), Cranberry (RM5.80), and Cocoa (RM5.80).

The icing on the cake, or should we say the spread on the bagel, is that they have 17 different toppings—savoury and sweet—to choose from!

If your mouth isn’t watering yet, it will be. These spreads are available for an additional RM1.80 to RM5.80 depending on your choice. You can even combine two flavours to create a unique bagel combo.

Pair your bagel with one of their flavoured milks or a classic coffee, be it an americano, latte, mocha or matcha.

MFT’s Review

We had to try what the regulars order: the Original bagel with Spring Onion Cream Cheese. One bite of this and we knew that this was no ordinary bagel nook. The bagel was fluffy, soft, and fresh, with a crispy exterior. The spread was savoury and flavourful, but not greasy or too heavy. Paired with the bagel, this was the perfect combo and our personal favourite.

Playing into the shop’s Japanese aesthetic, we also got the Original bagel with Sakura Spread, made with sakura powder imported from Japan, and condensed milk. This floral spread was a delightful surprise, with a delicate sweetness that was easy to enjoy, perfect for adventurous tastebuds.

Finally, we tried their Cocoa bagel with chocolate and peanut butter. Filled to the brim, this was a dessert bagel and an uber gooey treat. By the time we got our hands on it, the peanut butter was a beautiful melty mess.

Biting into it and allowing the two flavours to blend—it was an explosion of taste and texture. The chocolate didn’t melt as quickly so the contrast between the melted peanut butter and the thick chocolate spread was quite enjoyable.

Final verdict? These bagels are definitely worth the hype and the price.

Vintage Japan vibes

YODmilk.Shop embraces a charming Japanese-inspired aesthetic that perfectly blends tradition and warmth. The walls are adorned with colourful, vintage kraft paper posters and there are noren curtains scattered about, giving the space a laid-back, nostalgic feel.

The ambiance of this petite spot actually feels like you’re walking into a Japanese countryside coffee shop mixed with a little local influence.

Their fluffy bagels are showcased in an adorable wooden box with a glass display, inviting you to admire their freshness before you even take a bite. Seriously, it’s an adorable wooden box.
