Who can even claim not to love pizza? Whether you are having just one slice or having the whole thing with some friends, pizza is a versatile dish fit for any occasion. And the best pizzerias tend to have their pizzas baked in wood-fired ovens!

When a pizza is baked in such an oven, it comes out with a crispy, slightly charred crust with a perfectly chewy texture. And as it happens, KL and PJ have excellent pizzerias which take their craft seriously. And here’s just a handful of them:

1. Fire & Slice KL

Fire & Slice KL’s claim to fame has to be its farm-to-table experience. This pizzeria in Bandar Sunway is dedicated to its sustainability goals and sources most of its ingredients from Malaysian farms. Even its wood-fired oven is locally made, burning mangrove wood from Taiping to get a distinct smoky aroma.

The standout offerings here include the Laksa Pesto Pizza, which combines classic Italian and Malaysian flavour. Think tangy laksa mixing with creamy mozzarella and fresh seafood! And if you’re looking for something bolder, the Smoked Honey & Goat Cheese Pizza is a safe bet.

Address: Sunway Lagoon, 3, Jalan PJS 11/11, Bandar Sunway, 47500 Subang Jaya, Selangor

2. Pizzeria Dihyang

When it comes to Neapolitan-style pizzas, there’s no beating Pizzeria Dihyang. After all, this is the first among Malaysian pizzerias to be certified by Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, an Italian chef group. Every detail, from their hand-built Italian brick oven to their imported ingredients, replicates the experience of eating pizza in Naples.

Their pizzas are baked at 500°C, being whisked out of the oven within a minute or two. This gives the pizzas a signature char while keeping the crust soft and airy. A must-try is their Margherita D.O.P., featuring buffalo mozzarella, sweet basil and extra virgin Italian olive oil.

Address: 44, Jalan Pudu Lama, Bukit Bintang, 50200 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

3. Fino Pizza

Who said wood-fired pizzas are always expensive? Fino Pizza lets you enjoy your favourite pizzas without costing you an arm and a leg. This local pizzeria takes pride in its in-house dough fermentation, which produces a balanced flavour which pairs well with the toppings and sauces.

Fino is famous for its Moroccan Lamb Pizza, which combines spiced minced lamb with garlic yogurt drizzle, resulting in rich umami flavours. Meanwhile, the Chicken Rendang Pizza is a love letter for those who still love Malaysian flavours. And if you’re up for a feast, Fino’s 21-inch pizza is the perfect choice for group dining.

Address: 44, Jalan Datuk Sulaiman, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, 60000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

4. Proof Pizza + Wine

Not always that you can claim to be ranked as Malaysia’s top pizzeria, but Proof Pizza + Wine certainly can. For several years now, in fact! The pizzeria is ranked on the 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific list, so you know you’re in for a good time.

The Bangsar pizzeria uses an oven imported from Naples, made using actually volcanic rock! As a result, the pizzas here are almost always crispy but with perfectly tender crusts. And their signature? The Umbrian Black Truffle Pizza, with its earthy, creamy flavour profile.

Address: 29, Jalan Riong, Bangsar, 59100 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

5. The Italian Job PJ

While some pizzerias like experimenting with fusion flavours, The Italian Job prefers sticking to the good old flavours originating from Italy. And for that purpose, this pizzeria uses a Napoli-style oven, made entirely from clay.

What to order here? Try the Company of Mushroom, a vegetarian favourite with fresh cheese and mushrooms. Sounds simple but it is still a luxurious dish. And for something unique, check if they have the Durian Panzerotti, a dessert-style pizza with the King of the Fruits.
