This multicultural bakery in KL has pastries that get sold out once they’re fresh out of the oven

Nestled inside Pavilion Damansara is a new bakery that has quickly become a sensation, drawing insane crowds on a daily basis. With lines snaking out of the shop and around the corner, Verrona Bread and Patisserie now has a reputation that precedes itself.

You will find local pastry enthusiasts eagerly queuing for a taste of their global inspired pastries—but what they don’t realise is that navigating the queues might prove easier than actually securing one of their coveted flaky pastries.

Join me as I spill the ‘tea’ on the frenzy this bakery has sparked and whether or not it is worth clamouring for a taste of their famed pastries.

As you step inside, mingled with the low chatter of excited customers, is the inviting aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries that will make you weak in the knees. That is, if you manage to brave the queue waiting for you at the entrance.

So what’s so great about this bakery anyway?

This fairly new bakery is locally-owned. What’s special about it is that the owners have travelled around the world to covet recipes of globally popular pastries from countries like France, Italy, Japan, Korea, and more.

The idea sparked when the owners realised that quality baked goods are often priced at unreasonably steep rates. They aspired to open their own bakery where they could make quality baked goods accessible and affordable for all—and that is exactly what they did.

They took things one step further by securing classic pastry recipes from around the globe, making their bakery multicultural and highly sought after. It’s no wonder their pastries sell out as soon as they are pulled out of the oven. I mean, why fly all the way to Paris when you can get an affordable croissant that’s just as good at Pavilion Damansara?

At Verrona Bread and Patisserie, they only use French Corman butter! Yes, only French butter. It’s an expensive endeavour but naturally, worth every buttery bite. The butter and milk are both imported directly from France and all the breads and pastries are baked fresh daily. It’s safe to say, this bakery clearly knows how to make some quality bread and pastry.

So of course, we had to try it out for ourselves. Where there’s a queue, there’s an MFT member waiting in line to verify the virality!

MFT’s Verdict

We charged straight for the Millefeuille toast (RM14.90) as soon as it was pulled out of the oven. Apparently, this toast has a 1000 flaky and buttery layers, a little hard to believe huh? We thought so too.

While we were tempted to sit down and count the layers, we couldn’t wait to bite into the square shaped delight. It is baked with enriched dough that has been laminated into 3 folds and cut into smaller perfect squares. You can literally peel it back layer by layer. While it wasn’t as flaky as expected, it definitely was buttery and so fluffy soft. We rate this an 8 out of 10 and can attest that it is a must-try at this bakery.

Their hand-pulled danish (RM13.90) had a similar taste profile, as the ingredients used are nearly identical. However, it did differ in texture. The Danish was slightly more dense, which gave it a crispy exterior and a chewy interior. Those who prefer their pastries with a little more body and bite, we recommend you skip the Millefeuille toast and get this instead.

Our Favourite

Verrona Bread and Patisserie

Surprisingly, our personal favourite was the Otak Otak Cheese Bun (RM5.90), made with otak otak from Muar. This got a solid 15 out of 10 from us. A bit dramatic? Maybe, but we thoroughly enjoyed this pastry. Filled with a generous amount of otak otak, this bun was spicy, aromatic, and honestly, really yummy.

For all you Swiss Roll lovers out there, you may want to pick up a roll or two because these were really satisfying. Made with reduced sugar so it’s not too sweet, they offer three crowd-favourite flavours: vanilla, belgium chocolate, and nisho matcha.

Each roll (RM24.90) is filled with a lot of cream, but it is not heavy and doesn’t sit in your throat or stomach like cream sometimes does. Instead, the cream is soft, light, and won’t leave you feeling jelak

We couldn’t leave without trying their classic croissant (RM5.90). Made with sourdough, this was flaky and soft. They use a combination of flours imported from France and Japan, this gives the croissant a softer texture that Malaysians tend to enjoy more.

Is it worth the wait?

A trip around the world appears to be simpler than securing a pastry from Verrona Bread and Patisserie. So, is it really worth all that trouble? For the price? We think so.

Their pastries are all very affordable considering the premium ingredients used. Not to mention the quality and taste are top notch. We also must admit that they have a wide variety of breads, pastries, cakes, and tarts, so there is without a doubt something for everyone.

While they are more premium bakeries out there, the next time you’re looking to support a local bakery with bread and pastry recipes from around the world? You know where to go.
