What if you looked beyond the mainstream though—would you find a plethora of cheesecakes simply awaiting discovery? The short answer is, yes. From cosy cafes to vibrant patisseries, beckoning cheesecake lovers to indulge, these 7 underrated cheesecakes in KL and PJ are beautiful and delicious in their own way, so give them a chance.

It’s about time you venture off the beaten path and explore cheesecakes that have been quietly earning their stripes. Who knows? You just might find something better *wink*

1. The Sherry

Starting off strong we have The Sherry at Taman Bukit Indah in KL. It is a corner shop lot cafe within the neighbourhood that is aesthetically pleasing with a ton of natural light during the day.

Closely resembling the presentation at Tokyo Restaurant, the burnt cheesecake at The Sherry comes with a dollop of lavish cream. The cream, however, is a much lighter texture than Tokyo Restaurant’s. So, at The Sherry you get a richer, denser cheesecake with a lighter cream; while at Tokyo Restaurant you get a fluffy, airy cheesecake with a thicker cream. It just depends on your preference.

Several reviews have highlighted how delicious this cheesecake is, with balanced flavours. It is a must-try at this cafe in KL.

2. Cafe ETC

Cafe ETC is a rustic cafe in Chinatown with an unpretentious atmosphere and beautifully curated comforting dishes. Their signature burnt cheesecake is a highlight on their menu.

Each slice has a denser exterior with a soft and melty centre that almost mimics the texture of whipped cream. This means that every spoonful has a delicate combination of that silky, smooth, creamy texture with a little bit of bite and slight firmness. This is the perfect choice for those who like their cheesecakes not too dense and not too silky.

Jaslyn Cakes needs no introduction, it is one of the go-to places for many people when they’re craving a solid slice of cake. Serving cakes, pastries, and coffee made fresh daily, they have gained a steady stream of customers over the years and now have three outlets.

Walking into Jaslyn Cakes can be easily overwhelming, thanks to their extensive cake selection, but you can’t go wrong with a classic vanilla bean cheesecake, especially if you’re a cheesecake aficionado.

Their vanilla bean cheesecake is simple and classic, with a golden crusted base, a light tan on top, and a consistent creamy texture throughout each slice. While it holds its shape perfectly, it is not too dense and rich, instead it is creamy, light and cheesy.

4. TIGA KL

TIGA KL is a local brand that specialises in cheesecakes. Their bakery in PJ offers an array of pastries like fresh scones and homemade sourdough bread, and of course, they have cakes.

This particular spot will surprise you in the best way possible. They have a 5-star rating on Google and for good reason. Their cheesecakes are available in four different flavours: Original, Pandan, Earl Grey, and Coffee.

Numerous reviews have highlighted that this is the BEST cheesecake they’ve ever eaten! One look at a slice of the original cheesecake here and you’ll immediately be able to tell how buttery smooth, fluffy, and creamy it’s going to be. You will finally understand what it means to have cake literally melt in your mouth.

According to a review by a technical baker, they nailed this recipe in every aspect. It has the perfect texture and density, and is not too sweet or burnt. Described in one word, the burnt cheesecake at TIGA KL is: lucious. Thank me later.

5. Sugar and I

Sugar and I has been around for a few years now and became quite popular in the dessert world because of their dreamy bombolonis. Another thing they do really well? Cheesecakes.

Like TIGA KL, they have four cheesecake flavours: Nutelle Cream, Niko Neko Matcha, Salted Caramel, and French Vanilla. While most of the cheesecakes on this list have been quite simple in nature, Sugar and I has spiced up their cheesecakes.

Tucked inside their Nutella Cheesecake is a generous layer of gooey nutella. Similarly, their Salted Caramel Cheesecake has a silky smooth layer of salted caramel coating the top of the cake slice. These cheesecakes are definitely for those with a sweet tooth who also prefer their cheesecakes with a little pizzazz.

Cheesecake lovers in Aman Suria won the lottery with Jo’s Bakery. While this bakery serves all-day brekkie and fresh scones, their specialisation is in surprise, surprise: cheesecakes.

They have over 14 different types of cheesecakes. Yes, 14! With flavours like Lime Avocado, Durian, French Rose, and more, this bakery might just become your new favourite cheesecake pit stop. Their cheesecakes vary in texture and presentation depending on the flavour you opt for.

This spot is perfect for afternoon tea, or a quick dessert stop after lunch. If you’re going with someone who is not a fan of cheesecake, fear not, they have a variety of different cakes and sweet tarts as well.

7. Elevete Patisserie

Ending on a high note, we have Elevete Patisserie. While this spot is more of an online cake shop and not really a cafe where you can sit and chill with your slice of cake, we couldn’t not include it in this cheesecake list. They have a burnt cheesecake that is to die for. It is decadent, creamy, fluffy, and light, all at once.

Elevete mostly sells whole cakes online, so you probably will not be able to get a single slice of this heavenly burnt cheesecake. However, they are available in single slices on Grab!

Cheesecake lovers, go ahead and have a slice delivered right to your doorstep, you will not regret it. They have 4.8 stars on Google reviews. Some would even go so far as to say that this cheesecake is far better than the one at Tokyo Restaurant. It’s certainly cheaper at RM18.90 a slice.

This is a burnt cheesecake that you can easily have two slices of, a definite must-try.

P.S. Their lemon poppy seed slices are delicious too.
