Anyone can claim to be able to cook food fit for a king, but fewer still can say this without being completely literal. One bakery, based in Puchong, can certainly claim this, though, and it is none other than Torte by Linda.

Welcome to Torte by Linda

What the heck is a “torte”? To be clear, “torte” and “tortilla” are not remotely connected, aside from both being tasty. A torte is a type of cake commonly found in Europe, distinguished by its multiple layers.

Torte by Linda is, of course, specialised in these kinds of cakes. Its claim to fame is its Russian honey cakes, also known as Medovik. Such is its fame that its clientele includes members of Malaysian royalty!

Who is Linda?

How did a Puchong bakery come to be famous for such niche cakes? The answer lies with Linda Rozlee, the bakery’s founder, who travels a lot and fell in love with medovik while visiting Central Asia.

Wanting to learn how to bake these cakes, she went to Kazakhstan to take baking classes. Once she was armed with the necessary knowledge, she began creating her own medovik recipes to cater to Malaysian tastes.

Starting in 2011, she began selling her cakes and pastries to other bakeries. It was only in 2019 that she was finally ready to strike out on her own. Thus, Torte by Linda was born that year and has been chugging along ever since.

Making medovik is no easy task, with the flattened dough being layered onto each other. A typical medovik cake has eight to nine layers. Sweet to the bone, the medovik cakes sold here are frequently ordered by the royal families of Pahang and Johor!

What’s good to eat here?

That said, you don’t have to be a royal to eat here. Everyone is welcome and there’s more than enough affordably priced food to go around. Torte by Linda has cakes for sale, as well as some warm foods for fuller meals.

Still, the Classic Medovik remains the must-try of the menu. Though simple in appearance, the sweet, crumbly cake is to die for. This medovik uses Ukrainian honey, which is supposed to be a notch up above honeys from elsewhere.

Feeling like a princess? The Milky Girl Cafe would be perfect for you. According to Linda, this cake has German origins. The cake gets its name from the cans of condensed milk used to make this cake, which have an image of a girl emblazoned on them.

This cake was the perfect balance of sweet and milky. There was a certain moistness to the layers that make this condensed milk-based cake. The creamy filling really helps to balance out the overall sweetness, thus making every bite an enjoyable experience.

What else is there?

There are about five or so types of medoviks being sold on any given day, so there is always something new to try. The Summer Berries Medovik, Medovik Chocolate and Honey Chocolate Cake are all worth a mention here.

Torte by Linda also has other non-cake pastries, such as Eastern European pancakes. These are the Syrniki and Bini (Blinchiki), respectively. The former is akin to a warm cheesecake, whereas the latter has a sweet, buttery taste to it.

Some hot foods to try

As for the aforementioned hot foods, try the Spinach Chicken Palmeni Soup. The closest thing one could compare this to is probably Chinese wonton soup. The Adjarian Khachapuri, on the other hand, is a boat-shaped piece of dough stuffed with cheese, egg and butter.

Worth your time?

Whether you are a royal or want to feel like a royal, enjoying one of Torte by Linda’s offerings in-person is a must. So, the next time you are in Puchong, consider stopping by and seeing what tickles your fancy.
