There’s no denying that for a segment of Malaysians, there’s nothing in this world that can stop us from enjoying delectable pork. Why else would there be so many restaurants specialised in pork dishes out there? One such restaurant is the affectionately named Tipsy Boar.

Tipsy Boar, a pork lover’s haven

Located in Petaling Jaya’s Section 17, this seven-year-old restaurant fits in perfectly with the quiet neighbourhood surrounding it. This probably sits well with the chef-owner, Suren Krishnan, with his 22 years of experience, who runs the place with his partner, Tsun Yee.

As one can tell from the name, this place is a haven for pork lovers out there. You would be hard-pressed to find a menu item which doesn’t have anything oinking it. Then again, why would you come here if you weren’t intending on gorging on pork?

There’s more than just a pork-themed menu to encourage you to come here, though. Tipsy Boar makes as much of its dishes, ingredients and condiments in-house. This even includes stuff like mustard and even bacon.

Needless to say, a lot of love and attention to detail is put into anything that comes out of the kitchen here. With how cosy and comfortable it is, Tipsy Boar is a great place to drag your family and friends to for a porky meal.

Signature pork ribs

What better way to have a porky meal than by indulging in the restaurant’s beloved Pork Ribs (RM37). Made with American pork, the meat on its own is tender and falls off the bone easily. The best part has to be the sauces, however.

The Pork Ribs come coated in three different sauces: Signature BBQ, Memphis Dry and Sarawak Black Pepper. Of the three, my favourite has to be the Sarawak Black Pepper. The sauce was creamy, rich and spicy, complementing the meat perfectly.

That said, the other two have their fair share of fans and for good reason. The Signature BBQ is the all-classic, which no one can say no to. The Memphis Dry, on the other hand, bridges the taste gap between spicy and sweet.

The good old Classics

If you are coming with a big dining party, why not order the Classics Set (RM149.50)? The classics consist of a pork steak, a porchetta and a trio of sausages. Included in the set are coleslaw, curly fries, miso garlic broccoli and soft drinks.

The classics are all good in their own right. My favourite has to be the porchetta, which is a gorgeous pork roulade. This is prepared over a period of 3 days, with marination, air-drying and roasting involved. Its crispy skin beats out any siew yuk you can find out there.

Also worth a mention is the juicy pork steak, which is best enjoyed with a smattering of homemade mustard. The sausage trio is also deserving of the spotlight. Which do you think will be your favourite? Smoked German, Spicy Hungarian or English Cumberland?

A surprising Sisig

For something a little more Asian-inspired, look no further than the Sizzling Sisig (RM27.50). I initially expected a somewhat dry, rubbery dish from my previous experience. Thankfully, Chef Suren’s take on the Pinoy classic is quite different.

Cooked with pork neck, the sisig here actually has meat to enjoy, each piece oozing with juice. It is also not too dry, as it is cooked with a dose of mayo as well as an egg. Be sure to squeeze a lime across the meat to give it an additional tanginess.

The porkiest burger ever

You can never go wrong with a pork burger, and the Full Boar Burger (RM27.50) goes all in. Its pork patty, like almost everything else, is homemade, but is also topped with flavourful bacon. What seals the deal, though, is the egg which brings everything together.

A love letter to cheese lovers

Last but certainly not least, I also enjoyed the Bacon Truffle Mac & Cheese (RM29.50). This is a love letter for cheese aficionados, with its ingredients including mozzarella, parmesan and cheddar. With truffle fragrance and juicy fragrance, this is one meal guaranteed to please.

Worth your time?

Given the quality of each dish and the excellent service, I can say with certainty that Tipsy Boar is one restaurant I will want to visit more regularly. After all, it is one of those places where you fit right in by eating like a pig!
