Since its inception in 2016, Five Cafe in Section 5 has been more than just a place to grab a meal—it’s been a cornerstone of community and comfort. As a frequent diner and self-proclaimed PJ girl, I’ve enjoyed the cosy ambiance and comforting Western dishes on multiple occasions.

Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the dynamic duo behind the cafe’s evolution: the owner, Ramesh Subrayan, and the head chef, Rajesh Khanna Subramaniam. With a fresh new look and a revamped menu, Five Cafe is eager to welcome patrons back to experience what’s been cooking.

How Five Cafe came to be

In a neighbourhood teeming with Indian restaurants, Ramesh wanted to offer something different. Five Cafe was born out of his love for Western cuisine—his personal favourite—and his desire to provide variety to the local community.

But Five Cafe is more than just a spot for good food. It’s a space where people can connect, relax, and even get a little bit of free renovation advice, no strings attached, from Ramesh, who is a seasoned contractor.

As a contractor and CAD user and consultant for over 34 years now, Ramesh’s professional background heavily influences his approach to the food industry. Over the years, he has learnt various industry requirements. The idea of opening Five Cafe was inspired by his wish to hold short, casual software classes for locals. Turning the cafe into a multipurpose venue where education and interaction thrive.

True to his roots in sustainability, the cafe’s furnishings include studio tables and designs crafted by Ramesh himself, using recycled materials—a testament to his commitment to innovation and the circular economy.

When synergy strikes just right

Initially, Ramesh and Chef Rajesh collaborated solely to revamp the menu. But it wasn’t long before Ramesh recognised the undeniable synergy between them, leading to a formal partnership.

Chef Rajesh, with his extensive background in fine dining and European cuisine, brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. Their collaboration has breathed new life into Five Cafe, resulting in significant improvements that both partners are genuinely proud of.

A Western cuisine savant with a heart

Chef Rajesh describes himself on TikTok as a “true blue chef born to share love and kindness through his food and adventures”. His passion for cooking started at a young age. Over the years, he has honed his skills in fine dining across the globe. Including, consulting on seven different restaurant openings.

Realising that fine dining is a niche market in Malaysia, Chef Rajesh was thrilled to transition to a more laid-back yet thriving environment at Five Cafe.

The cafe’s concept has always revolved around the tagline: Local, Western, Coffee & Cakes. When Chef Rajesh joined the team, he identified key opportunities for improvement, particularly in the dessert offerings. This led to the introduction of cakes from Elevete Patisserie, adding a delightful new dimension to the menu that’s sure to satisfy customers.

“Right now, there is a lot of innovation and creation, but I believe in going back to the basics, the classics, and perfecting them, that is more important,” he responded, assured. While he focuses on perfecting classic recipes he knows will work, Chef Rajesh also incorporates hints of creativity like using lava rocks for his grilled dishes, which offers a less ‘direct heat’ alternative.

When I asked the chef what he would recommend to someone who is visiting Five Cafe for the first time, he highlighted, without hesitation, their signature Grilled Chicken Thigh.

Five Cafe reintroduced

As one of PJ’s oldest cafes, Five Cafe has always exuded a nostalgic charm. Tucked away at the end of a quiet street, Five Cafe aims to be a welcoming spot for everyone—whether Malay, Chinese, Indian or beyond—to gather and enjoy comforting food, drinks, and desserts.

With a commitment to value-for-money dishes and retro music playing softly in the background, the cafe offers a dining experience that feels like a warm embrace from the past.

During my visit, I sat in the tropical outdoor seating area, surrounded by greenery that provided shade and a cool breeze. It was the perfect setting for a laid-back coffee date with friends, complete with slices of cake to share.

In celebration of Merdeka, from August 20th to 31st, Five Cafe is offering a 57% discount to those born before 1957. This gesture not only honours the older generation but also reflects the cafe’s deep-rooted sense of community.

MFT’s Verdict

Let’s dive into the dishes that make Five Cafe a must-visit.

Grilled Chicken Thigh (RM24): A chef’s recommendation that didn’t disappoint. The black pepper sauce was rich and reminiscent of classic sizzling chicken chop. The chicken was juicy and succulent, though I prefer my fries a bit crispier. Overall, a solid and comforting dish with generous portions.

Smoked Duck Fried Rice (RM16): The fried rice itself was simple, but the smoky essence of the duck added a savoury, juicy contrast that elevated the dish.

Salted Egg Char Kway Teow (RM16): A unique twist on a classic, this dish achieved a great balance with the salted egg, without being overpowering. I would have preferred it slightly more charred for an extra kick.

Rose Creamed Salmon Pasta (RM28): Served with salmon and topped with tobiko roe, this dish offered a creative flavour profile. The tomato base was subtle, allowing the creamy sauce to shine.

Lamb Shoulder (RM38): Tender and well-seasoned, the lamb shoulder was paired perfectly with sweet potato fries. An affordable option that doesn’t skimp on taste.

Meat Lover Pizza (RM28): A carnivore’s dream, loaded with chicken pepperoni, ham, sausage, and shredded chicken. A hint of spice would have taken it to the next level.

Coffee (RM12): Rich, smooth, and creamy—this coffee had no burnt aftertaste and was thoroughly enjoyable.

Strawberry Basil Soda (RM13): Refreshing and punchy, this drink was a delightful way to cool down.

Five Cafe: your neighbourhood go-to

Five Cafe remains committed to fostering a sense of community, making it an ideal spot for both work and leisure. With Ramesh offering classes and free renovation consultations, the cafe encourages camaraderie and togetherness, inviting those from across Klang Valley. His projects and props on display, also make the space feel like more than just another eatery in PJ. What Five Cafe embodies today, has been Ramesh’s dream since 2016.

With a capacity of 90 people, it’s a popular venue for gatherings, celebrations, meetings, and events. Plus, parking is a breeze on weekends and in the evenings.

As we navigate the post-Covid world, Five Cafe stands as a pillar of community spirit—a perfect place to reconnect over a comforting meal, surrounded by nothing but good vibes.
