“So Nice!” LRT users praise SS15 pillar murals which add an artistic touch to their commute

Thousands of Malaysians commute by LRT each day, courtesy of the Klang Valley’s relatively functional public transportation network. While most LRT stations are presentable to the average Malaysian, they are not much to look at either. This may just change, however. A public art initiative has brought a welcomed change to LRT stations, as can be seen with the SS15 pillar murals.

Nice pillar murals in Subang JayaPhotographs of gorgeous murals adorning the large pillars beneath the SS15 LRT station have recently been circulating on local social media as residents and visitors alike admire the displayed artworks. On Reddit, user CiplakIndeed1 posted a photo of one of the artworks, featuring a young girl in a dinosaur costume, with the title, “Nice mural in Subang Jaya“.

These murals did not spring out of nowhere, however. They are the result of a weeks-long initiative that began back in December 2024. The Sang Seni SS15 pillar murals project is a collaboration between Rapid KL and Subang Jaya assemblywoman Michelle Ng. Rapid KL stated that work on the murals began on 20 December and that the project is nearing completion as of this month.

Every pillar mural, a unique theme

Rapid KL stated, “This first project of its kind showcases the artwork of local artists around Rapid KL public transportation. Each mural carries a unique theme, full of creativity and inspiration. In addition to beautifying the environment, the murals will hopefully improve the image of Subang Jaya, especially SS15.”

According to SAYS, assemblywoman Ng’s idea for the murals stemmed from the fact that the pillars had been previously defaced by vandals. Seeing an opportunity, Ng encouraged artists to showcase the highlights of the SS15 area. Thus, the artworks depict the area’s culinary scene among other things. “SS15 has always been a trendsetter: from hosting the cafe scene to the bubble tea street, and now Chinese hot pot.” She said she hopes more murals are introduced to other pillars in SS15 and Taipan.

The SS15 mural pillars have received a positive response. Commenters on social media have praised the artworks, their creators and the initiative as a whole. Facebook user Ldesierra Inma Von Parker suggested implementing the project on an ambitious and wider scale. “…terutamanya mesej2 yg berunsur kenegaraan, patriotik, promosi produk pelancongan.” (Especially messages with nationalistic elements, patriotism and tourism promotion.) Others said that the SS15 mural pillars are proof Malaysians are a creative bunch who need more avenues of self-expression.
