Unless you have been living under a rock, you will know that Malaysia is currently facing weeks of hot weather. As you get all warm and sweaty, the best way to beat the heat is to get a treat. Specifically, a treat of cold, sweet soft serve.
The best part about soft serve? It is widely available, and it is a dessert which doesn’t blow a hole in your wallet. With that in mind, here are the five best places, in no particular order, to get a soft serve that costs you less than RM5.
- FamilyMart

It is sincerely not possible to make such a list without mentioning the Japanese convenience store chain, which is quite beloved for its “sofuto” ice-creams. It certainly helps that the chain shakes up things with new flavours every now and then.
At the time of writing, a sofuto costs RM2.90 per cone and RM3.90 per cup. FamilyMart always has two flavours available at any given time. One of these will always be matcha, while the other is the seasonal flavour. Right now, it’s avocado.
- 7Café by 7-Eleven

It is kind of interesting to see how 7-Eleven has changed over the decades. It used to be considered a novelty due to it being open 24/7, before losing its shine for a bit. Now? It’s back in full force, with 7Cafe being a truly welcomed concept.
7Cafe’s soft serves are also just as affordable, coming in at RM3 per cone and RM4 per cup. Interestingly, whenever a seasonal soft serve flavour is rolled out, soft serves can go as low as RM1, so keep an eye out for any news!
- emart24

emart24 is South Korea’s contribution to the local convenience store scene. The chain recently opened its hundredth outlet in Kota Damansara and it is likely to continue growing. Good, if you like soft serve.
Thinking about it, the usual soft serve options at emart24 seem to match up with its aesthetics. The yuzu flavour soft serve is bright yellow and the charcoal a dark grey. Both are tasty though, with prices starting from RM1.90.
- CU

Did you know CU has a history with FamilyMart? For a time, the chain of stores which would become CU operated under the FamilyMart name. Eventually, it would split off to establish itself as a new, individual brand name.
Like any respectable convenience store option out there, CU has a selection of soft serves available at any time. Uniquely, you can actually double up on the portion of soft serve. A normal-sized soft serve typically costs RM2.99 and a double-up RM4.99.
- Zus Coffee

Bet you never expected Zus Coffee to show up on this list! While the homegrown franchise is indeed a go-to place for caffeine addicts, it has recently dipped its toe into the dessert market. Just in time for the ongoing heat wave!
For now, offerings are relatively simple, with the Vanilla Soft Serve clocking in at RM3.90. There is also the Drizzle Soft Serve, priced at RM5.90 with the addition of syrup. Hopefully, Zus will add more flavours to the mix soon.
6. McDonald’s

With all these convenience stores popping up, it can be easy to forget that McDonald’s also sells soft serve! No doubt, most of us have fond memories of enjoying a cone of the stuff, especially with a side of fries.
The Sundae Cone used to cost just RM1, but has since gone up to above RM2. It is just the sign of the times, really. And if you have more splurge on, treating yourself to a McFlurry is never a bad idea.
