For those of you who don’t frequent the Mont Kiara area, Seng Kee isn’t new to the KL food scene. In fact, it’s been around for 30 years now and continues to be a popular supper spot in the area. Originally from Johor Bahru, the restaurant has built a good reputation with over 600 reviews on Google, and a rating of 4.3 stars.

The interior here is a bit more elevated compared to your typical kopitiam or hawker-style chicken rice eateries. It’s clean, air-conditioned, and offers a comfortable dining experience that sets it apart from the usual atmospheres.

While they do have a variety of dishes, they are popular for their chicken rice and porridge offerings.

We all know Mont Kiara can lean towards the pricier side when it comes to dining out, but Seng Kee manages to keep things surprisingly affordable. Despite being located in a more upscale part of KL, their signature steamed and roasted chicken rice starts at just RM11, pretty reasonable, right? Of course, some diners may still feel that the prices are a bit higher compared to other spots, but hey, it’s all about perspective.

The chicken rice comes with flavourful oil rice and a steaming bowl of chicken soup on the side. For those early risers, note that while the shop opens at 7am daily, the chicken rice is only available after 10am, so plan accordingly.

What really sets Seng Kee apart, though, is their chicken. Based on reviews, the Boneless Steamed Kampung Chicken Rice and Roasted Chicken Rice are the most popular orders. Both types of chicken are incredibly tender and juicy and honestly folks, the Google photos speak for themselves. I even came across a comment saying the chicken was too soft. Huh, imagine that.

Customers also rave about the accompanying chili and ginger scallion sauces, which are vibrant and packed with flavour. The chili sauce strikes the perfect balance between tangy and subtly spicy, but the real magic lies in the ginger scallion sauce. It’s prepared differently here, blended with more scallions and a hint of green chili, giving it a slight green tint and a pleasant kick. Many diners agree that the chicken just wouldn’t be the same without this special green ginger sauce, which brings an aromatic punch and just the right amount of saltiness to perfectly complement the chicken and rice.

Porridge lovers, time to party

Seng Kee is also known for its variety of Cantonese-style porridge that are sure to hit the spot. Here, the porridge base is slow-cooked for three hours, creating a rich, flavorful foundation. This base is then topped with preserved vegetables, a dash of shaoxing wine, and a blend of secret ingredients, each element enhancing the depth of flavour.

Their Seafood Porridge is a must-try, with huge, fresh river prawns and a mix of other seafood, definitely a crowd-favourite. If you’re looking to try something a bit different, their Australian Beef Porridge is a rare option, featuring slices of premium beef in that same comforting porridge base. For a more familiar and classic choice, opt for their Minced Meat Porridge, complete with century egg and salted egg. You can also get creative and customise your own claypot porridge. No matter which porridge you choose, one thing remains the same—they come in massive pots that could probably feed a village.

In addition to their signature chicken rice and porridge, Seng Kee also offers a variety of wanton noodles. You can choose from minced pork, char siu, or siu yok, with both soup and dry noodle options available. For something a little different, try their roasted or steamed chicken wanton noodles. While many enjoy the bouncy, springy texture of the egg noodles, the flavour of the noodles themselves is fairly ordinary, so keep that in mind. But hey, when it’s 11:30pm and your favorite local spot isn’t open, you’ll take what you can get, right?

Now that Seng Kee Chicken Rice has extended their hours until 12am daily, those in the area can easily satisfy their late-night cravings for chicken rice or porridge, staying warm, full, and cosy well into the night.
