A slice of Seoul in Sri Hartamas

Capturing the essence of Korea’s street food culture, this restaurant in KL flaunts a laid-back atmosphere that you probably won’t find at any other Korean establishment here in Malaysia.

Stepping into this restaurant is almost like walking along a bustling Korean food street. A section of the interior is designed to resemble an authentic Korean street-tent setup, complete with vibrant blue covers. You often see actors and actresses on screen slurping down a bowl of noodles at casual eateries like this and it makes your mouth water. The other half of the space mimics a typical Korean eatery with tables and chairs filling up the space.

Now frankly speaking, the ambiance is far from posh—with a setup that is deliberately casual. If you’re looking for a high-end or formal Korean dining experience then Samgori Pocha is not for you. Instead, at this eatery, they’ve managed to create a space where patrons feel comfortable enough to really unwind and let loose.

It offers a rare communal experience where the focus is on enjoying the food, drinks, and games, in a laid-back atmosphere. Think: loud conversations, hearty meals, and good company. The energy can get pretty contagious here, which makes it an ideal spot for both casual diners and those looking to enjoy a ‘lit’ night out with friends.

Street food always hits the spot

The menu here is a tribute to Korea’s much-loved street food culture. From spicy army stew to cheesy potato pancakes, the food sold here aims to capture the authentic flavours that have made Korean street food famous worldwide.

Standout items include their Korean fried chicken and their BBQ pork belly with garlic. Their fried chicken is boneless, so it’s a fuss-free snack to have with a round of drinks. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, it is served with two different sauces.

Their pork belly portion is generous. The meat is juicy and not rubbery at all, with a burst of savoury flavour. Loaded with grilled garlic pieces; garlic and meat lovers have to try this.

Another favourite is of course the cheesy potato pancakes. Pause for that cheese pull moment. The pancake is served with a light and spicy sauce that balances out the greasy and rich flavours from the cheese. Cheese lovers, don’t miss out on this one.

Their menu offers a variety, so you’ll definitely find something you enjoy eating.

A taste of Korean culture

The experience goes beyond the food though. Nowadays you can get good Korean food just about anywhere. This restaurant however, incorporates the element of Korean drinking games, which if you didn’t know, is very popular in Korean culture.

Korean alcohol not only complements the flavours of Korean street food, but is also an integral part of the Korean dining experience. So adding this interactive and playful aspect is what elevates your overall experience at Samgori Pocha.

It is a unique way to spend the night with friends, adding dimension and a whole lot of fun, while enjoying good food and drinks. It also strongly reflects the communal and lively spirit of Korean social gatherings.

Since they encourage drinking games, the drinks menu here is also extensive, offering a range of drinks you cannot find at a lot of other Korean eateries here in Malaysia. You can get a beer tower and a bottle of soju for only RM79. The drinks they offer also pair very well with Korean street food, like makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice wine that is sweet and creamy.

Late night Korean street food in Sri Hartamas

Another thing that sets this restaurant apart is its extended hours. Open until 4am daily, it caters to night owls and those who enjoy a late-night feast. It is a popular spot for socialising, so it is not uncommon to see large groups of friends enjoying a comforting meal and drinks, as they unwind from their stressful day to enjoy each other’s company. With its lively and informal setting, I guess you could call it a ‘Korean mamak’.

It is worth noting that the space can get quite stuffy, especially on busy nights. While some might find that this adds to the authenticity and charm of the experience, others may be put off by this.
