Malaysia’s food scene has been buzzing with fresh, exciting developments lately. One of the most unexpected trends to emerge is the rise of plant-based indulgence. Enter Rightside, the country’s first fully vegan fast food chain, which has been quietly making waves since it opened its doors in November 2022. With four outlets already under its belt, Rightside is proving that the demand for environmentally-friendly, vegan-friendly fast food is stronger than ever.

If you’re imagining bland salads or tasteless, limp veggie burgers, think again. Rightside is here to redefine what fast food can be. They even made it to The Malaysian Book of Records for being the first plant-based fast food restaurant.

This homegrown venture draws inspiration from classic American diners and offers a menu packed with a range of satisfying fast food. They have tacos, burgers and fries, milkshakes, and everything in between.

What sets Rightside apart from the usual fast food joint? The menu features 100% plant-based items. Yep, you read that correctly—veggie lovers, rejoice! From juicy burgers and vegan cheese to plant-based minced meat and creamy milkshakes, every item is crafted with plant-powered ingredients. How awesome is that?

The mastermind behind Rightside is Low Sze Yie, better known as Bob Low. Bob, a long-time vegetarian, wanted to create something that would elevate the plant-based food scene in Malaysia. She often found vegetarian options here a bit uninspired, so she decided to take matters into her own hands. Teaming up with partners, she set out to create a fun, vibrant diner that didn’t just cater to vegans but to anyone who craves a juicy burger or tasty taco without the meat.

The appeal of Rightside isn’t just in the food. It’s the whole experience. Step into one of their outlets, and you’re immediately transported to a cool, red-and-white American-style diner with neon lights and retro vibes. It’s a place where you can kick back, enjoy a vegan burger, and sip on a creamy milkshake without a second thought about what’s in your food. Yes, these milkshakes are both dairy-free and sugar-free, so you can indulge without any guilt.

What’s even more impressive is that Rightside isn’t just a restaurant. They’re also a food manufacturer. All the plant-based products, from the juicy burgers to the sauces, are developed in-house by their own dedicated food tech team. This isn’t a company that’s just sitting idle; they’re constantly innovating, improving, and pushing boundaries. Every single menu item is made from scratch right here in Malaysia.

Their manufacturing facility in Klang ensures that everything, from the pea-based proteins to the vegan milkshakes, is created locally, with quality and sustainability at the forefront. Talk about an innovative concept backed by solid manufacturing.

Since its debut at 163 Retail Park in Mont Kiara, Rightside has been on a roll. The diner has expanded to three more locations in KL, quickly making its mark on the local food scene. The original outlet at 163 Retail Park is continuously raking in reviews, maintaining a solid 4.3-star rating. It’s clear that veganism is more popular with locals than we might have thought. Rightside is offering a bold, fresh take on fast food. According to reviews, it’s just as tasty as it is guilt-free.

The menu at Rightside is packed with options that could easily fool even the most die-hard meat lovers. Their burgers look—and apparently taste—just like the real deal, and the taco fillings? Just as satisfying as any meaty alternative. With a growing selection of items made from alternative proteins, it’s obvious that this is just the beginning of a whole new way of thinking about fast food.

They’ve got three main protein options: Zero Beef, Zero Chicken, and Zero Lamb. Pick your protein and enjoy it in a burger, taco, or burrito. According to Rightside, their Philly Cheesesteak is a must-try with tender steak nestled in a toasted vegan butter hoagie roll. For those who want to try a little bit of everything, the mini burgers let you sample all three protein options. Don’t forget to treat yourself to one of their zero-bloat milkshakes, or their soft serves, available in either vanilla or coconut. Honestly, everything sounds so good, even someone who enjoys meat might be tempted to give it a try (I’m that someone).

Is this the right side of fast food?

What’s truly impressive about Rightside is its inclusivity. Their dishes aren’t just plant-based; they’re crafted to be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of whether you’re a vegan, a flexitarian, or just someone looking to try something new.

With its focus on quality, creativity, and sustainability, Rightside is a shining example of how fast food can evolve to be both delicious and eco-friendly. So if you’re ever in the mood for something a little different, check out one of Rightside’s locations in KL.

It’s a plant-based fast food revolution, and it looks like it’s here to stay.
