P. Ramlee restaurant

Ask any Malaysian today which local celebrity has left an impact on the country’s culture and the answer you would almost always receive is P Ramlee. Though the famous actor and singer may no longer be with us, his legacy continues to live on in the hearts and minds of many people. If you happen to miss the age of P. Ramlee, one restaurant in Klang may just transport you back to the golden age of Malaysian entertainment.

Real kampung vibes from P Ramlee’s time

Restoran Kukus, located in a quieter part of the royal town, goes all out when it comes to giving off authentic kampung vibes. Not only is the restaurant located within a kampung-style wooden house, but its furniture also has an equally antiquated look. Antiques from that era are everywhere; you might have to wonder if this place never left the 1960s. And just to add to the atmosphere, P Ramlee can almost always be heard serenading patrons as they enjoy the food.

Speaking of food, what does Kukus have to offer? While Kukus’ menu offers a variety of typical kampung food, the restaurant’s speciality is a dish from one of Malaysia’s neighbours. Ever heard of Tong Mo? Most Malaysians likely have not, so what is it? It is a type of beef sausage with Cambodian origins, made by stuffing beef into cow intestines.

Strings of these special sausages can be found in abundance at Kukus, hanging over a grill heated by burning coconut husks. This meaty delight is, of course, best enjoyed when it is served hot and fresh. The Tong Mo at Kukus are served in the form of skewers and most customers will likely find the meat to be juicy, aromatic and flavourful. This dish is so popular that the restaurant smells like smoke and meat during the busiest parts of the day.

What else to eat?

There is more to Kukus than meaty sausages, though. Another offering on the menu worth savouring is the Nasi Kukus Ayam Berempah. This is a rice dish served with chicken infused with turmeric and other spices. Also on the menu are Steamed Kaya Butter Buns, a perfect breakfast meal. The bread is soft and fluffy, while the kaya and butter balance themselves out with the sweet and custardy texture. And to wash it all down, take your pick between Air Sirap and 3 Layer Nescafe.

Worth your time?

So, is Kukus worth a visit? Yes for the food, and double yes if you want to relive the good old days when P Ramlee was a mainstay on national radio. Just be warned that the place can get packed to the brim on weekend afternoons and it can get rather hot, without modern air-conditioning. What were you expecting? It’s a kampung lah!
