Do I have a fried chicken obsession? Probably. Trust me when I say I’m completely hooked, and will go out of my way to try any fried chicken. So, when I heard about Wong Soon Kee, an economy rice shop in Subang Jaya famous for its kam heong fried chicken, I knew I had to check it out.
There’s just something magical about that golden, crispy skin and juicy white meat that gets me every time. A delicious symphony of textures and flavours that never fails to put a smile on my face.
Will this 45-year-old eatery fuel my fried chicken obsession?
A Subang staple

Wong Soon Kee has been a staple in the Subang area since 1979. Operating for over four decades now, it has nearly 1,400 reviews, most spotlighting their signature creation: the kam heong fried chicken. Based on these reviews alone, it’s clear they’ve mastered the art of fried chicken.
Customers can’t stop raving about the crispy texture, juicy meat, and that distinct kam heong flavour that sets their fried chicken apart from other competitor eateries. It’s clear that Wong Soon Kee has created a special recipe. One that resonates with anyone who has ever craved the simple joy of a well-cooked piece of fried chicken.
Wong Soon Kee isn’t just a one-trick pony though. As a well-established mixed rice eatery, they offer a mouthwatering lineup of economy rice classics, though the fried chicken undeniably steals the show.
You’ll also find an array of hawker stalls within the restaurant serving up local favourites like wantan mee, curry mee, Penang prawn mee, and more. Drawing from a food court concept, the different stalls ensure that there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Regulars warn that this restaurant is almost always bustling, especially during lunch time, so you might find yourself sharing a table with other hungry patrons.
Wok to plate: kam heong style

For those curious about the magic behind Wong Soon Kee’s famous fried chicken, let me give you the inside scoop. They marinate each piece of chicken in a special kam heong batter that infuses it with a unique blend of spices. This creates a flavour profile that’s both savoury and lightly spiced.
Once marinated, they toss the chicken into a bubbling cauldron of hot oil. It’s accompanied by fresh curry leaves and sliced onions, additional elements to boost the aroma and taste of the chicken.
You can enjoy this fried chicken on its own or as part of their cap fan selection, where it pairs perfectly with their variety of dishes. When my plate arrived, the kam heong fried chicken practically took over, its golden-brown hue and enticing aroma demanding my full attention.
MFT’s Review

The fried chicken looked absolutely irresistible, and I wasted no time digging in.
The moment my fork broke through that crispy skin, I was bubbling with excitement. The crunch was music to my ears, and as I bit into the juicy meat, I detected the subtle hints of kam heong spice. It was a good first bite—the skin was light and crispy, the chicken was served hot, and it had just the right amount of saltiness.
If I could change one tiny detail, it would be a little more oomph in the kam heong flavour. The initial crunch gives way to tender, succulent meat, with each bite releasing a burst of savoury goodness. I’d rate it a solid 8.5/10.
Now, a little heads-up: the portion size of that chicken is no joke people! Even for someone like me, who can easily polish off two pieces of ayam goreng McD, I found it quite a challenge. I’d recommend sharing it with a friend or colleague unless you’re in the mood to feast.
If you’re disappointed with the spice level of the chicken, I’d recommend pairing it with their in-house made sambal. It packs a delightful kick that lingers on the tongue, which I enjoyed.
As for the rice, vegetable, and pork dish we got, it was nothing to write home about on its own, but when enjoyed alongside the chicken, it made for a satisfying mixed rice meal.

Biggest fried chicken in Subang
Is this the biggest fried chicken in Subang? I’d say it’s pretty hard to argue otherwise.
Whether you live in Subang or are just passing through, if you’re a self-certified fried chicken lover like me, make sure to pay Wong Soon Kee a visit at least once. I mean, it’s kind of impossible to regret sinking your teeth into a massive, crispy piece of chicken, so why not give it a shot?
I’ve never felt envious of Subang residents before, but this time, I can’t help but feel just a tad bit jealous.
