Going to Penang soon? Bring recyclable bags as Penang has started its no-plastic-bag campaign

When they were first invented, plastic bags were seen as a wondrous material which was cheap and durable. Now, they are one of the biggest contributors to pollution as they take forever to degrade and release harmful material into the environment. It is possibly for this reason that Penang is taking the right steps in reducing the use of plastic bags in the state.

On 1st March, the state launched its “No Plastic Bag 2.0” campaign, aimed at encouraging consumers to use only reusable bags when shopping. Various types of businesses are joining this campaign, including supermarkets, convenience stores, hypermarkets, fast food restaurants and pharmacies. These businesses will no longer provide plastic bags for sale. Instead, recyclable bags and similar alternatives will be offered for sale if necessary.

Do Penangites accept?

Bernama interviewed several Penangites and found that most accept these new rules. Muhammad Muslim Ahmad Faizal said he was used to bringing recyclable bags when shopping. “Previously, there were no plastic bags from Monday to Wednesday, so we locals are used to bringing our own reusable bags when shopping at supermarkets.” He noted that out-of-towners might not be aware of the policy.

Lenient enforcement for now?

Penang Green Council (PGC) general manager Josephine Tan said some Penangites still think that plastic bags can be bought from businesses. To avoid further confusion, the PGC will redouble its efforts to educate consumers on the new policy. The group will also work on distributing recyclable bags to the public. Meanwhile, State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo said policy enforcement will remain lenient for the next six months, from March to August. This will give businesses and the public time to adapt to the policy.

Not the first time

This campaign follows the “No Free Plastic Bags” initiative of 2009. The move made Penang the first state to mandate businesses cease giving out free plastic bags. In previous years, they were not used on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On Thursdays and Fridays, the bags were sold to consumers for RM1 each. Since 2009, the initiative has netted the state RM8 million.

What do we think?

With how pervasive plastic is in the environment, any step taken to reduce plastic usage is necessary. Though it may inconvenience us once in a while, we still have to think of the bigger picture. Plus, just take this as an opportunity to show off your most stylish recyclable bag.
