Curry noodles just before dawn?

In the stillness of the night, those who are privy to the existence of this stall, wake up at odd hours, just to make it in time to snag a bowl before it sells out. The stall owner, a Chinese Aunty named Samantha, opens shop at 4am, sometimes even as early as 3:30am.

Now, you may be wondering, who in their right mind would wake up in the wee hours of the morning to have curry noodles at 4am? My thoughts exactly!

We all know we Malaysians are renowned for our love affair with food. Still, forsaking precious sleep and waking up before 4am is stretching it.

Yet, herein lies the enigma that is this Aunty’s 4am curry noodles at Paramount Kopitiam. The crowd will surprise you. You’d even be considered lucky if you were able to get a bowl around 6am.

Join me as I peel back the layers of this delicious mystery and uncover why locals are willing to rise before the sun to savour a bowl of this Aunty’s noodles.

The hero of the curry noodles

Two words. Minced pork.

That’s right. Right off the bat, the most significant difference that sets this Aunty’s creation apart from most curry noodle stalls, is that she uses finely minced pork in her curry noodles. It’s not often that you find curry noodles with minced pork.

As you can imagine, the minced meat adds a meaty and fatty touch to the bowl of noodles. This elevates the savouriness of the dish. Tender morsels of meat soaking up that curry broth and mingling between the noodles? The result is a symphony of flavours and textures that satisfy the taste buds with every mouthful.

The simple addition of minced pork to curry noodles is a stroke of genius. It deepens the depth of flavour by infusing the dish with richness from the pork and delightful texture we never even knew we craved in curry noodles.

Another unique aspect of Aunty Samantha’s curry noodles is that she uses wanton mee instead of the typical yellow mee or vermicelli noodles.

We all know that the texture of wanton mee is perfectly slurp-worthy, providing the ideal thickness and bite thanks to its springy nature. It soaks up all that fragrant curry broth without bloating and getting soggy too quickly. It’s a surprise that more stalls do not offer the option of wanton mee for your curry noodles.

A symphony of flavours and textures

To take things one step further, on top of the generous serving of minced pork, each bowl of curry noodles comes with fat and silky wantons, pork balls, sliced fishcake, and beancurd tofu. Yum!

Steaming broth is ladled onto the piping hot noodles before the bowl is assembled and ready to be served. The broth is light, fragrant, and has the perfect consistency for a ‘before the crack of dawn’ bowl of noodles. Needless to say, Aunty’s sambal is also delicious and gives the bowl of noodles a nice kick of spice.

It’s clear that this 4am curry noodle stall offers a unique and satisfying bowl of curry noodles that is now rare within Klang Valley, sadly.

It’s no wonder that after 27 years of operating this noodle business, Aunty Samantha still has a crowd of regulars gathering at Paramount Kopitiam at 4 in the morning. Carrying on her late father’s legacy, she certainly knows what she is doing.

Besides curry noodles, you can also get dry curry noodles, dry wanton mee, and clear noodle soup—all below RM10.
