This underrated cafe in TTDI has picture-perfect sandos that are anything but neutral

If you’re leisurely walking down the ever-bustling lanes of TTDI, you will most probably miss this hidden gem nestled on the first floor of a nondescript shop lot. This unassuming space is home to a quaint sando shop that boasts sheer aesthetic appeal, in terms of both interior and dishes. At Neutrals, it almost feels like sandwiches are elevated to an art form and as the title suggests, the sandwiches here are anything but neutral

Is this your first time hearing about Neutrals, or are you one of the lucky few already in the know about this hidden gem? Either way, join me as I take you through why the picture-perfect sandos at this cafe should be absolutely dominating the brunch scene.

Neutral interiors for the win

Say it with me: neutral interiors for the win! As a lover of minimalism, this cafe’s aesthetic truly shines through my standards.

The space is incredibly cozy, with natural light pouring in through large windows, casting a warm, inviting glow on the minimalist interior.

A ‘sun-washed’ haven, just as they like to say at Neutrals.

The ambiance here is undeniably tranquil, inviting you to unwind. Picture concrete surfaces, lush greenery, and a touch of industrial chic all blended seamlessly.

While Neutrals occupies a spacious lot, the limited seating is actually a plus in my book. It ensures the cafe never gets too crowded, making it an ideal spot for quiet time or those remote workdays. The conveniently placed plug points are just an added bonus!

The spacious and uncluttered interior exudes a sense of calm and quiet—Zen is the word that comes to mind. My advice? Grab your journal and indulge in a classic main character moment, jotting down your thoughts in the serene setting of this cafe—just like in the movies.

Neutral is a hyperbole

What truly sets this place apart, however, are the sandwiches. Forget your typical ham and cheese or tuna mayo—here, each sando is nothing short of a culinary masterpiece, at least in my humble opinion.

The menu offers a carefully curated selection of sandos that are almost too beautiful to eat. Picture layers of vibrant, fresh ingredients meticulously stacked between slices of hearty rye bread.

They offer four distinct varieties, including a vegan option: a hearty sando packed with roasted Moroccan-spiced cauliflower, zucchini, eggplant, a mix of lettuce, all brought together with a flavorful tahini miso dressing and crispy garlic. At RM24, it’s a fresh and satisfying vegan meal.

Their signature offering, which comes highly recommended, is the Fried Jerk Chicken Sandwich (RM28). This stunning sando features juicy, spiced chicken thighs, paired with pickled onions and a lettuce mix, all atop a rich ranch dressing. One look at this beauty, and your mouth will be watering—I guarantee it.

For the pescatarians, there’s the Crispy Perch Fish Sandwich (RM28), where crispy buckwheat-battered perch is embraced by soft bread. It’s their most comforting option, like an elevated take on the classic McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish. They also offer a Smoked Duck Sandwich (RM28), featuring tender slices of pan-grilled smoked duck, complemented by red apple slices, a hint of whipped cream cheese, cabbage slaw, and crisp lettuce.

I’m sure every customer feels a momentary hesitation before taking that first bite, just to admire the beautiful presentation of each sando. These sandwiches aren’t just the perfect bite for brunch—they’re an explosion of colours, textures, and flavours that tantalise the senses. Plus, their sandwich varieties change from time to time, keeping the menu fresh and exciting.

No neutral varieties here people

Aside from picture perfect sandos, another thing that Neutral does really well, are visually stunning rice bowls. They currently have six different varieties, all served with Jasmine rice. Two of the six are vegetarian options. Their bestseller is the Grilled Tandoori Style Chicken (RM33)—another dish that will make your mouth water.

Neutrals also has an array of savoury and sweet waffles that you might be interested in. All within the range of RM22-RM27.

As you finish your meal, don’t forget to treat yourself to one of the beverages from their menu, which, to my surprise, has been praised in many Google reviews. Customers seem to especially enjoy the velvety smooth and fragrant specialty coffee at Neutrals. For those who don’t drink coffee, they also offer a selection of teas, kefir sodas, and other crafted beverages.

And for the dessert enthusiasts, I haven’t forgotten about you. This café offers a selection of sweets that will satisfy any sweet tooth. The Classic Burnt Cheesecake (RM17) comes highly recommended, but as a chocolate lover myself, I’d personally go for the Crispy Chocolate Chip Cookie with Tahitian Vanilla Gelato (RM18).
