Have you ever found yourself eating lunch on a random Tuesday afternoon and suddenly thought, “I want to change my career”? That’s exactly what ex-engineer Nik Johari Nik Mat did when he bravely bid goodbye to his corporate job after 15 years, to open a Nasi Ayam shop.
Now a local favourite with over 7,500 reviews and a stellar 4.8-star rating on Google, Nik’s story proves that chasing your dreams can be incredibly rewarding, especially when the name of your shop is catchy enough that leaves you going “ehhhh”?!
From working 9-5 to opening up a pisang goreng stall, and now, running a popular nasi ayam restaurant
Nik wasn’t afraid to follow his passion. Fueled by a desire for a fresh start, he left his secure, high-paying job as an electrical engineer at Shell to pursue an entirely different path and enrolled in a training program under the famous Pisang Goreng Crispy Sambal Kicap Johor. From that knowledge, he ended up opening his own Pisang Goreng stall with only RM1,000 capital, as told by Malay Mail.
Faced with underutilised capacity in his central kitchen from his pisang goreng business, a spark of inspiration struck from his trip in Thailand. A delicious chicken rice he encountered in Thailand ignited a desire to create his own chicken rice dish that blended Malay, Hainanese, and Thai flavours. He even harboured ambitions of crafting his own take on KFC’s iconic fried chicken!

After Nasi Ayam Mafia becomes a hit, he decideed to focus solely on the restaurant and even expanded his menu items to other chicken styles like nasi ayam bakar!
All about the nasi ayam mafia and its other ‘drool-worthy’ gangs in the menu
What makes their trademark dish, the Nasi Ayam Mafia special here is actually not just the nasi ayam itself. Customers become regulars because they can’t get enough of the Sambal Mafia, which has that fiery, ‘pedas nak mampos’ kick that Malays love so much, perfectly paired with the warm plate of nasi ayam.
Crunch lovers also rave about the Nasi Ayam Crispy, who gets the same love as their nasi ayam mafia. Though the restaurant claims that their ayam crispy is as big as your arm, it’s not entirely true, but it’s still a pretty decent size that will leave your appetite satisfied!

Another reason why patrons keep coming back to this restaurant? Simple: they DON’T play around with the portion here. For just RM8.90 per set, the portion is HUGE, with unlimited refills for the sambal, drinks, and various other side dishes like Kuah Kandar and Liver, Sup Kaki Ayam, Ketam Masak Lemak, and Sup Tulang Merah Singapore!
There’s also other options of sambal aside from the Sambal Mafia, like Sambal Budu, Sambal Kicap and Sambal Belacan. We dare say, this is probably one of the most affordable nasi ayam you’ll get in Sepang, or the entirety of Klang Valley, even.
Building on the popularity of their Crispy Chicken, Nasi Ayam Mafia offers it in various combinations with their Nasi Kandar, Nasi Kukus, and Nasi Lemak set. They also take Ayam Penyet to another level by serving it alongside rich Kuah Masak Lemak and spicy Sambal Belacan, offering a unique twist on this classic dish.
With a variety of chicken dishes and unlimited refills you can get at this restaurant, it’s no surprise that Nasi Ayam Mafia has become a hot spot for patrons to get delicious hearty meals worth their Ringgits!
The restaurant opens daily because they want to get rich, and they’re not shy to admit it…
