In addition to the many food stalls throughout the state, Penang has quite a vibrant nightlife if you know where to look. Amongst the more popular watering holes, Magazine 63 Bar is among the coolest, with its unique concept.
Magazine 63, the hidden speakeasy

This speakeasy bar, which opened in 2017, is quite literally a hidden gem. It is tucked away on Magazine Street next to the local lottery shop. There will be a banner claiming the lot to be a furniture shop. What a blatant lie!
Anyway, push through the wooden doors that are behind the unlocked wrought iron gate at the front. Once you are through, you are transported to a completely unexpected setting. It will almost feel like you stepped into a time machine.
The place can be described as resembling a traditional Chinese inn. You know, the sort which would act as the backdrop of a Chinese martial arts film. Think hanfu-cladded staff, red lanterns, exposed brick and neon lighting!
A bit of backstory
Apparently, the bar was established by a group of friends who had a crazy idea of founding their own business. A total of 13 partners were involved in the creation of Magazine 63. Each one brought their own set of talents, which would come in handy when it came to operating the bar.
Unique cocktails

Magazine 63 has quite an extensive cocktail list, with many served in traditional Chinese porcelain tableware. The cocktails are also named after cultural references. Three of the signature cocktails are the Nv Er Hong, Drunken Master and The Legendary Four Beauties.
Of the three, Nv Er Hong is probably the most potent one. Its combination of rum, vodka, gin, cointreau, tequila and beer is quite capable of knocking out light drinkers. If you are one such drinker, the sweet, light Legendary Four Beauties will likely be up your alley.
Tasty food

What would a bar be without some food options as well? Among the offerings you can try, the Crispy Fried Pork is likeliest to leave you wanting more. With a crunchy crust and savoury meat, it is nothing short of the perfect bar snack.
Other than that, you could try the Smoked Duck and the Pan-Fried Squid. Between the two, the former is a delightful little appetiser, with the right amount of fat and doused with black pepper sauce. The squid, on the other hand, goes hand-in-hand with a dash of chilli sauce.
Worth your time?

Overall, if you are visiting Penang and only have time for one bar, Magazine 63 is the one to leave a good impression on you. Maybe, just to fit in, it may be best to come dressed in a traditional Chinese outfit.
