If you’re looking for a place that serves comforting Nyonya food with a whole lot of heart, look no further than this charming restaurant in KL. It’s a place where nostalgia meets great taste, and no, you won’t find a chef in the kitchen. Instead, the real magic comes from Ahma, the owner’s auntie, who whips up all the dishes with love—just like she would for her grandkids. It’s as if you’re being invited into her home for a warm, home-cooked meal. This is LAMA Antique & Restaurant.

Eat, shop antiques & enjoy the space

The combination of restaurant and antique shop is a unique and delightful concept. It’s not just a place to eat; it’s an experience. The moment you step in, you’re greeted by the warm ambiance of an antique-filled space that feels like stepping into a bygone era.

The owner’s father, an antique trader and heritage building contractor with over 40 years of experience, built the restaurant himself. His decades-long passion for antiques shines through every corner of the space, creating a cosy yet eclectic environment that transports you to another time. The space simply oozes charm.

The second floor is an open space filled with stunning antiques, ranging from delicate porcelain to grand paintings, all available for purchase. If you have a taste for vintage decor, you might find yourself browsing while waiting for your food. There’s even a large dining table upstairs that seats up to 12 people—perfect for a family gathering or a special celebration.

The interior of the restaurant is a feast for the eyes, designed to feel like an old Peranakan house with its eclectic mix of colours, beautiful textiles, and pretty stained-glass windows. The double-story structure is brimming with antique decor, and each piece tells a story. From intricate furniture to eye-catching knick-knacks, every corner offers something new to admire. It’s like dining in a museum, except here, you’re actually allowed to touch everything (Please be careful, lah). This is an ideal spot for collectors and anyone looking to take a piece of history home with them.

MFT’s review: Penang-style Nyonya flavours

Now, let’s talk about the food. Everything at this Nyonya restaurant is influenced by the rich flavours of Penang, the owner’s hometown. Don’t expect typical Nyonya food here. Instead, they offer the comforting, homestyle cooking you’d find in a Penang household. The dishes are vibrant and bursting with flavours, perfected over generations.

One standout dish that’ll have your mouth watering is their Fish Assam Pedas (RM58). The gravy is thick, rich, and packed with flavours that strike a perfect balance between savoury and umami. It’s not too sour, which makes it a comfortable choice for those who might find some Assam Pedas too intense. The only thing the dish could use is a little extra salt for that ‘kari kickthat some of us crave.

If you’re not a fan of the tangy dishes, then the Ayam Kapitan is the dish for you. At RM36, this chicken dish is nothing short of spectacular with tender chicken that’s bursting with rich, creamy notes. Cukup lemak, cukup rasa!

For those who love spice, the Sambal Udang Petai (RM45) is a must-try. It’s fiery, comes with a generous helping of petai, and guarantees to make you sweat, which we loved. Don’t worry, if you can’t handle the heat, simply let Ahma know, and she’ll tone it down for you. You should also try the Kerabu Pucuk Paku, Cencaru Fish Sumbat Sambal, Cucur Udang, and the Pie Tee.

No meal is complete without dessert, and this place has a treat that will have you coming back for more. The Sago Gula Melaka (RM9) is an absolute winner, with a perfect balance of sweetness and texture that’ll make your taste buds dance. Their Pandan Lemongrass refresher (RM7, bottomless) is the ideal drink to wash down all that delicious food.

Final thoughts: Homey, delicious & full of heart

LAMA Antique & Restaurant feels like a heartfelt tribute to tradition, family, and culture. With Ahma in the kitchen, every dish feels like it’s been made with the love and care of a grandmother.

With all that antique decor dotting the space, it’s clear that the restaurant isn’t just about food, but also about creating a memorable experience. Whether you’re a fan of Nyonya cuisine, vintage treasures, or simply looking for a homey spot to enjoy a meal, this place is sure to hit the spot.
