Despite its Swedish origins, IKEA is a household name among Malaysians. For those who can afford it, IKEA has aesthetic and practical products which are worth having in one’s home. And now, it seems the furniture giant is planning to expand its reach in Malaysia.

Sarawak branch in the works

According to a Bernama news report, IKEA has plans to open a new outlet in Sarawak. This potential outlet will be the first physical store IKEA has in East Malaysia. At the moment, it has only two outlets in all of Malaysia. These are in Damansara and Cheras respectively.

Speaking to Bernama, IKEA Malaysia country retail director Malcolm Pruys said that the retailer has already opened an online store dedicated to serving Sabahans and Sarawakians. This would enable East Malaysians to shop easily and pay less. Additionally, IKEA has recently established a fulfilment centre in Kuching’s Demak Laut Industrial Centre.

Pruys said retailers should invest in pricing instead of profits since inflation is decreasing. “IKEA understands that people are generally more mindful when it comes to spending on home furnishings.” He also said that Sarawak’s environmental commitments line up with IKEA’s own sustainability goals.

Positive reactions

So far, online reactions to the news has been positive, especially from folks living in Sabah and Sarawak. Many Sabahans have suggested that the retailer open an outlet in their state as well. “Please consider opening in Kota Kinabalu too,” wrote Facebook user Jean Ivy Denis Gompion. Some commenters also suggested opening the planned outlet in Miri, due to its strategic location in between Sabah and Sarawak.

What do we think?

Previously, East Malaysians who adored IKEA products had to pay for shipping fees from West Malaysia. Oftentimes, they would also have to travel to Kuala Lumpur to shop in-person. An East Malaysian IKEA outlet would be good news for many Malaysians. As there is no confirmation on the location and possible opening date of the Sarawak store, it’s best to stay alert for updates for now.
