Brace yourselves, chicken rice ball enthusiasts—there’s exciting news on the horizon! As Malaysians, we’ve all embarked on long road trips purely for the sake of good food, and driving to Malacca for their famous chicken rice balls is no exception.

But here’s the game-changer: Chicken rice balls in Selangor is finally a thing. You can now indulge in this highly sought-after dish at Ho Meal in Taman Selayang. While it’s still a bit out of the way, nestled near Batu Caves, it’s definitely a shorter journey than the drive to Melaka.

This means your cravings for those savoury, compact rice balls are now just a short trip away. Chicken rice balls have never been more accessible to those in Selangor!

Beloved Melakan specialty

The distinctive preparation of chicken rice balls—moulding rice into compact spheres—was originally a practical solution for workers in need of a portable meal. Though its convenience remains, chicken rice balls have evolved into a comforting favourite, enjoyed for their rich flavours and nostalgic appeal.

So cherished are these balls that many are willing to make the journey to Melaka just for a taste. The scarcity of chicken rice balls in Selangor and outside of Melaka only enhances their charm and fuels their demand.

Located within a housing area, Ho meal in Taman Selayang offers a laid-back dining experience. It captures the essence of an old-school Chinese restaurant with its zinc roof, cement flooring, and surrounding low walls. Parking can be a little tricky here because it is located within a housing area, especially during lunch hours as it can get quite crowded.

At the heart of Ho Meal’s limited menu is of course their signature chicken rice balls, a dish that undoubtedly draws the majority of the eatery’s customers.

As of the writing of this article, the restaurant has actually been around for about a year and is highly rated on Google Review. Based on the reviews, it is clear that patrons do indeed come here solely to try the chicken rice balls.

However, they do have a few other dishes like ayam masak merah with organic pandan rice and pork balls soup.

Ho Meal’s Melaka-style chicken rice balls

The restaurant claims to offer authentic Melaka-style chicken rice balls in Selangor.

They have the traditional steamed chicken with three rice balls (RM11.90), and a fried chicken version (RM12.90) too. These prices are definitely more affordable than the cost for petrol and toll for a round-trip to Melaka.

They offer a range of set varieties that come with either drinks, or vegetables like bean sprouts and okra. The portions appear to be pretty standard and align fairly with the price you’re paying. Moulded to perfection, the rice balls closely match the ones in Melaka in terms of size.

Multiple reviews have highlighted that there is a slight wait time ranging from 10-20 minutes, but everything is always served fresh and hot.

Both the fried and steamed chicken here are tender and juicy, though some may find the steamed chicken to be a bit bland, but that comes down to preference. The rice balls have the perfect bite and texture, not too sticky or mushy, with just the right amount of flavour. A subtle hint of chicken broth infuses the rice balls with a favourable savoury essence.

Pair the chicken and rice together and let me tell you, you’re in for a treat! The elements together in each mouthful, create a comforting burst of flavour that is satisfying and heartwarming.

The chilli here is thicker than most and packs a pleasant punch.
