If you’re the kind of person who can’t stop talking about food (and we’re talking nonstop), then get ready to meet your new obsession; Segar Dim Sum. Located in the heart of Cheras, KL, this halal hotspot is a must-visit spot that may just have you raving.

Founded by the passionate Mr. Nizam, Segar Dim Sum isn’t just another cafe, it’s the ultimate destination for halal dim sum and, wait for it… halal claypot chicken rice. Now, if you’ve been hunting for a place serving up this classic dish with a halal twist, you know it’s a rare find. But here? It’s not only available, it’s downright delicious. We promise you’ll have plenty to say about it once you’ve tasted it. Oh, and did we mention they sell frozen dim sum too? Yep, it’s a total game-changer.

Trust us, Segar Dim Sum will leave you with more than just a satisfied stomach—it’ll have you coming back for more.

From a roadside stall to a booming business

Segar Dim Sum didn’t immediately start out as a bustling cafe with a loyal following. It began as a humble roadside stall in 2015. Picture a small pasar stall with a vibrant and colourful array of dim sum, each piece selling for just RM5. It was a simple setup, but the flavours? Oh, they were anything but simple.

Fast forward to 2022, and Segar Dim Sum is now a thriving cafe with an extensive menu. Oh, and they didn’t stop there. Today, they’ve got over 600 agents selling their convenient frozen dim sum. Talk about growth!

The heart behind Segar Dim Sum is rooted in family and culture. Mr. Nizam’s mother was Chinese, and that’s what inspired him to bring the joy of dim sum and claypot rice to the halal market. The passion and dedication that started with a few simple dim sum baskets now extends to over 40 different types of dim sum and a mouthwatering selection of halal claypot rice options such as mutton, chicken, squid, and even crab. What started out as a roadside stall has become a popular halal eatery in Cheras.

MFT’s review

We kicked things off with the Claypot Nasi Kambing Black Pepper and it did not disappoint. This dish was an absolute flavour bomb, earning an instant 10/10 from us. The rice was fragrant, fluffy, and buttery, with a punch of flavour from the kicap pekat. Slow-cooked for 20 minutes, every bite was packed with intense savoury goodness. The real star, though, was the lamb. It was smokey, peppery, and oh-so-tender. You get that perfect balance of bold kambing flavour and rich soy goodness with every bite of this dish.

We also gave the Claypot Nasi Ayam and Claypot Nasi Sotong a go, both of which were solid choices, but honestly, the kambing still reigns supreme in our books.

Now, since dim sum is their thing too, we couldn’t resist diving into their offerings. We were overwhelmed by their variety with options like Classic Chicken to Kicap Cili Padi to even Korean Cheese Chicken. We wanted to try all of them, but… you know, our stomachs had other plans. Fresh, colorful, and super flavourful—their halal dim sum is on another level. Their variety really did keep things exciting.

Next up, we slurped up some Yee Mee Ayam Cendawan, which was so satisfying. The rich, thick sauce coats the noodles perfectly, making each bite comforting and saucy. Totally hit the spot. We ended on a sweet note with their Kaya Pau. It was warm, soft, and tasty, though we did wish for a little more kaya filling. Still, it was a nice way to end our meal at Segar Dim Sum.

Halal dim sum & claypot rice

All in all, this cafe is a solid choice for halal dim sum and halal claypot rice in Cheras. Whether you’re dining in or grabbing something to take home, you can’t go wrong here.
