Atmosphere and getting a table…

Although the wait time varies significantly each time depending on the crowd, the queueing and ordering system at Hai Kah Lang is efficient and well-oiled. It could be your lucky day and you’ll only have to wait about 15 minutes, or 2 hours like we had to! Once you get there, inform the staff of the number of people in your group and in return they will give you a number and menus—and now, the waiting begins.

The first time they call your number, don’t get too excited, this is just to take down your order. They will call your number again once they have a table ready for you. After which, your food arrives pretty quickly. The PJ branch has two floors, flaunting a laid back atmosphere with breezy outdoor seating and air-conditioned indoor seating.

Fresh seafood from Sabah!

Before serving, they add imported Shao Xin wine from China, which makes the broth very aromatic and flavourful. Other bases include tom yum soup, curry laksa, dry, or porridge.

You are spoilt for choice with a wide array of the freshest seafood on display, flown in daily from Northern Borneo. You can pick anything from clams to crab to octopus and more. There are a few ways you can enjoy your fresh seafood selection. The two most popular options are the clear seafood fish bone broth or the milky seafood fish bone broth. Both broths are boiled with fish heads for about 4 to 5 hours.

The portions are generous for the price, which ranges between RM8 – RM30 depending on what you get. The chef’s recommendation is the Mixed Seafood Noodle (RM28.90), which comes with three pieces of crab, lots of clams, shrimp, boneless grouper fish, and squid, served with a briny-sweet clear broth. This is a great choice for those who may get overwhelmed by the plentiful variety Hai Kah Lang has to offer.

The tender, baby octopus side dish (RM14.90) is highly recommended, served with garlic oil, some find this super addictive!

What did we get?

Michelin Bib-Gourmand Seafood

Of course we had to try their chef recommendation! The Mixed Seafood Noodle was a 10/10 for us. The milky soup had a rich umami flavour with the perfect consistency and the seafood really was FRESH. Although this is a rather simple noodle dish, it is a simple dish done well.

We also tried their Spanish Mackerel Noodle (RM16.90), which got another 10/10 from us! There were generous chunks of thick cuts of mackerel which were not overcooked and yes, we do have to say it again; very fresh.

The clear soup was flavourful and sweet, but not overpowering. Delicious. Finally, we tried their Ikan Kurau Noodle (RM16.90), and we gave it a rating of 9/10. They have a few different homemade sauces and chilies that you can get, to add a little kick of flavour and spice to your dish.

MFT’s verdict?

So, are they really deserving of their recognition? We think so! We give this place an overall rating of 8/10 and can see why it is a Michelin Bib-Gourmand restaurant.

While prices cannot rival our staple hawker stalls, as they are on the higher side, we cannot deny that their fresh seafood concept is brilliant and does live up to the hype. Their variety is untouchable and their broths complement the seafood and noodle texture well. Every dish is also highly customisable, offering each patron a guaranteed satisfying meal.

You will find lots of uncles and aunties dining at this establishment, a sure-fire way of identifying the worth of an eatery. If you’re a seafood lover, you have to visit this Michelin Bib-Gourmand seafood restaurant.

The only question is, can you brave the wait?
