Previously, the only way you could get pizzas in Malaysia was by ordering from the usual chains. Things have changed though, with many locals launching indie pizzerias with unique takes on the Italian staple. One such pizzeria is none other than Good News Pizza.

Located in Chinatown, facing the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel there, this pizzeria was established in 2023. It gets its name from the fact that there’s a newspaper office upstairs. One wonders if the reporters working there subsist on pizzas from down here.

Authentic Neapolitan pizzas

Good News is a pizzeria that specialises in Neapolitan-style pizza. For non-pizza connoisseurs, this style of pizza originates from Naples in southern Italy. Pizzas made in this style have thin, soft crusts and are baked in wood-fired ovens at high temperatures.

To that end, Good News does try to stay as authentic as possible. For example, cheeses are largely imported from Italy. Pizzas here are also baked in a proudly Malaysian-made wood-fired oven. Typically, each pizza is baked for about two minutes at temperatures of 450°C.

Special care is poured into the ingredients of each pizza. The dough, in particular, is rather unique. It is fermented for up to 72 hours, which gives it a nice texture and intense taste. Notably, the pizza crusts at Good News resemble the spots on a leopard.

How are the pizzas?

Speaking about pizzas, let’s talk about the pride and joy of Good News. This place is known for its Borneo Pizza, a delicacy unique to the restaurant. Its actual name is Pepe del Borneo, but most people just call it the Borneo Pizza.

This pizza is so-called because it uses Sarawak peppercorn. This peppercorn is considered to be among the world’s best. You can certainly confirm it the moment you bite into this cheesy, vegetarian pizza. The pepper is rich and intensely flavourful, leaving you hungry for more.

Love cheese? Then, you are gonna be eloping with the Quattro Formaggi. No expense was spared in preparing this pizza with its four cheeses. The combo of mozzarella, gorgonzola, pecorino romano and ricotta will send you straight to heaven – in a good way, of course!

Given the previous two pizzas are vegetarian-friendly, you might want to shake things up with the meaty Pancetta di Manzo. The pancetta is delightfully smoky, made using cured Australian beef. Add the tangy San Marzano Pomodoro sauce and you will have a party in your mouth.

Snacks and appetisers

As for snacks and appetisers, you can’t go wrong with either the Insalata di Calamari Croccanti or the Chickpea & Sweet Corn Fritters. The former is a love letter to seafood lovers out there, whereas the former is a delightful snack perfect for vegetarians and vegans.

Before you end your meal, perhaps treat yourself to the Panna Cotta Ciococolato e Caramello. This chocolatey dessert has the perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness, with the caramel mix being addictive. It also goes well with Good News’ selection of wines and beers.

Worth your time?

Overall, if you love Italian food, with a slight Malaysian twist, you wouldn’t go wrong with Good News Pizza. It’s also pork-free and has vegetarian options, so there’s something for everyone here.
