I tried all the flavours at SS2’s new gelateria Dimpled and this is what I honestly think

Imagine leaving behind the monotony of a 9-to-5 in Singapore, to pursue an unforeseeable dream of opening a gelateria. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Eugenia, the charismatic owner of Dimpled—SS2’s newest gelataria.

Aside from getting the scoop on why she quit her high-paying job after 10 years to open her dream gelateria, I was also fortunate enough to review all of Eugenia’s creations on display that day. Having been there twice before, I already knew which gelato was my favourite; but I was intrigued by what other flavour profiles I would be surprised with.

Join me as I take you through my journey of tasting each unique flavour, offering an honest review of this exciting addition to SS2’s dessert scene.

Serai Limau Sorbet: This was the special gelato of the week. It had a strong lemongrass flavour with a citrusy touch. The gelato itself was white in colour. It was light and had a lemony undertone. If you prefer a more refreshing and savoury gelato, this would be a good choice.

Watermelon Basil Sorbet: Watermelon is actually my favourite fruit and this one had a really strong watermelon flavour, but not the artificial kind. There’s an undercurrent of basil that’s not too overpowering, you can almost taste both flavours individually, at the same time. This one was also light and fresh.

Strawberry Biscoff: This took me right back to my childhood. I knew it tasted familiar like candy, or something I used to eat. Then I realised that it tastes like the Bliss strawberry yoghurt drink. It has a thick and creamy consistency, the biscoff is on the lighter side so it’s not too sweet. It is more strawberry forward than biscoff.

70% Chocolate: This is a premium flavour. It is really thick with a strong cacao taste, perfect for chocolate lovers. It is milky but not in a muak way. I think this was the richest flavour they had that day and I would personally get it with a cone or waffle, to balance out the richness.

Matcha: I am not a fan of Matcha, let me make that very clear—so naturally, I could not pinpoint whether this was good or bad Matcha gelato. To me, it had a very strong matcha taste, it was thick and a pretty shade of green, but not my preference for obvious reasons.

Hojicha: This surprised me because it tasted more like bubble tea. I enjoyed it even though I don’t like green tea. It was lighter than the Matcha flavour and something I would actually get a scoop of.

Espresso Stracciatella: Unlike most stracciatella I’ve tried, I could really taste the espresso in this one. It had little bits of chocolate which added a bit of texture. To me it tasted like a tiramisu latte, and I am obsessed with anything tiramisu related. It lacked the grip needed to make me want more, but only because there are other flavours I prefer.

A moment for my top picks

Tie Guan Yin: While I expected this one to taste like bubble tea, it surprisingly had less of a tea taste than the Hojicha. As a Chagee stan, this one felt familiar. It is very light, not heavy on the tongue, not too sweet, with a perfect consistency. An easy win for me.

Blue Milk: Prettiest blue ice cream I have ever seen, this flavour took me by surprise and ended up being one of my favourites. I’m finding it difficult to describe the flavour profile. This may sound a bit dramatic, but it felt like taking a bite out of the sky. It tasted like caramel, but in a blue way? It was light and creamy, and super easy to consume. I could really taste the sea salt, yet it was all so well-blended, a 9/10 from me.

Pistachio: Like Eugenia, my ultimate favourite is the pistachio. This is the best pistachio gelato I’ve tried in Malaysia so far, and the closest one to the pistachio gelatos I’ve had in Italy. A 9.5/10!

dimpled review

Overall, I noticed that none of the gelatos leave that overly thick and milky feeling that can sometimes coat the upper palate and tongue, and leave you feeling uncomfortable. They don’t feel artificially flavoured and are not icy at any point.

You’ll find them in the classic tin tubs that they use in Italy, and they are reasonably priced at RM9.50 for a single scoop and RM18 for a double scoop, with a few extra charges for the premium and extra premium flavours.

I also really like that you can opt to have a half waffle at RM5, which is really convenient for a small eater like me. Did I mention that I absolutely love waffles here? They are fluffy, light, and you can taste the butter, just the way I like it! Paired with my favourite pistachio gelato? Yum!

I don’t know about you, but I’ve found my new go-to dessert spot.

Final thoughts

Dimpled has 4.8 stars on Google, so I know I’m not alone when I say that Eugenia’s gelatos are worth every penny.

In fact, just after our interview, I overheard a customer, a young Malay man, telling her appreciatively, “Your ice cream is better than the ones in the States!” Like me, his favourite is also the pistachio.

I am excited to see what new flavours Eugenia creates next.
