According to hushed whispers and rumours, hidden in an inconspicuous, run down building in Old Klang Road near Choong Wen Primary School, lies a old-school Chinese restaurant known only to a select few.

Let the search begin!

Tucked away from the prying eyes of the city’s hustle and bustle, is a hidden treasure, Pu Yuan, known for their noodles. Its doorway is a well-kept secret whispered amongst local aunties and uncles. Only those fortunate enough to stumble upon its doorstep are treated to its culinary mastery.

Its unassuming front belies the culinary wonders that await within. Join us as we expose the layers of secrecy surrounding this hidden noodle eatery—you know we’re not one to gatekeep.

As you step through the narrow entryway, you will be graced by the comforting clatter of sizzling woks, and the aroma of simmering broths. With how enclosed the lot is, it almost feels like you are eating in an underground space or basement. The interior is exactly what you would expect from an old-school restaurant.

We all know the main focus at restaurants like these is plating delicious food and not sophisticated interior design. Still, there’s something very nostalgic about the round tables and blue plastic chairs, that adds to the whole experience of dining here.

Operating for nearly 40 years now, Pu Yuan is known for their traditional Hokkien dishes. There are usually long queues during lunch time, and they are quite packed during dinner time too.

The restaurant is small, so you can expect to wait a while during peak hours. Reviews highlight their home cooked flavours, Hokkien authenticity, and uncommon dishes.

MFT’s Verdict

We tried their Top 2 best selling dishes: the Chao Bai Guo (RM13 – small), which is essentially fried rice sticks that come with prawns; and the Chao Shu Fen (RM13 – small), fried sweet potato noodles.

Now, what do we really think of this hidden old-school noodle shop? Is it really that good, or do the aunties and uncles have it wrong this time round?

Well, it’s safe to say that the uncles and aunties did us dirty by not telling us about this place sooner!

We gave the fried rice sticks an 8 out of 10. They were chewy and well-coated, but could have used just a tad bit more flavour. Pair this with their homemade chilli sauce for that additional kick.

The star of our meal was the Chao Shu Fen, which got a solid 9.5 out of 10 from us. The noodles were soft but springy and full of that sweet and salty flavour, very satisfying and comforting to eat.

A fair warning though, if you are not a fan of coriander and celery, you may want to ask them not to put any in your order. The portions are quite small for the price, but filling nonetheless.

While many eateries nowadays are bustling with modernity, this old-school Chinese restaurant in Old Klang Road stands as a testament to the enduring charm of old-school traditions and recipes.

Bearing culinary nostalgia with flavours of the past, Pu Yuan is a cherished establishment for good reason. If you find yourself craving some traditional Hokkien noodles, you now know where to go.

Remember, the next time you hear aunties and uncles whispering about a certain restaurant, it’s probably worth giving it a shot—they usually know what they’re talking about.
