Like nasi lemak and roti canai, chicken rice is a staple in the diets of many Malaysians. A simple but filling dish, the combination of fragrant rice and steamed or roasted chicken remains beloved. Little wonder that chicken rice stalls are found in almost every food court and kopitiam.
One issue some people have when eating chicken rice is the abundance of bones. It is not a fun dining experience to have to pick bones from your teeth regularly. Thankfully, at Yan Kee Hainan Chicken Rice, this won’t be an issue you will run into.

You see, this Ampang chicken rice stall is famous for its boneless chicken. All the tastiness of a regular chicken rice without the inconvenience of having to do work while eating it. Little wonder that it has grown popular with the locals.
It probably helps that the hawker manning the stall is actually a former hotel chef. Apparently, he has over 20 years of experience in the industry. Now that he is running his own hawker stall, he can bring his cooking skills to the masses.

At Yan Kee, up to 50 chickens are used to feed hungry customers daily. These chickens are sourced from all across Malaysia, including Penang, Johor and Melaka. Interestingly, the stall sells both kampung and normal chicken, which customers can pick between.
One thing you may notice here is just how yellow the chickens are. The brightly coloured fowl are that way because they are first marinated with yellow jujube before they are cooked. Once steamed, they are then dipped into cold water to add to the chicken’s tenderness.
After being retrieved from their icy bath, the chicken is then completely deboned. By the time the chicken is garnished with garlic oil and plated, there is not a single bone left embedded in the meat. It truly is a blessing for us lazy Malaysians out there.
How good is it?
The chicken is a delight to savour, with how tender and meaty it is. However, the homemade chilli sauce is a surprise, with its rich, spicy flavours. The best way to enjoy the chicken is with some rice doused with garlic oil and just a pinch of chilli sauce.
Now, the sides

Other than the chicken, customers can enjoy a variety of side dishes. Google Reviews praise the steamed fish, which is flavoured with chillies, ginger, and garlic. Bean sprouts are also available, with portions apparently being rather generous in terms of size.
Worth your time?

Ultimately, if you love chicken rice but not the hassle of deboning it, Yan Kee is the right place for you. Just be warned that the lunch crowd here gathers fast. If you come too late, there’s a chance things will be sold out.
