Chap Goh Mei, the 15th day of Chinese New Year, is sometimes called Chinese Valentine’s Day. Traditionally celebrated by Hokkien families, this holiday has since been embraced by most Chinese communities and even other Malaysians. This week, if you have no idea where to go to celebrate Chap Goh Mei, The Mines Shopping Mall has an event especially for you.
Where and when?
On this Tuesday (10 February), the Seri Kembangan shopping mall is hosting a Chap Goh Mei Festival, open to all members of the public. The festival will be from 12pm to 10pm, taking place at L1 West Court, Outdoor Canal near Esquire Kitchen. The highlight of the festival will be the Orange Toss, which will have participants tossing oranges into the canal for good fortune.

Traditionally, this practice is meant for young unmarried women who will write their phone numbers on the skin of their respective orange before tossing it into the water. Afterwards, bachelors are free to pick up an orange and give a call. Who needs dating apps like Tinder and Bumble when you have oranges? And if that doesn’t work, the festival has a Matchmaker Emcee, helping connect lonely folks together on this day of love.

In addition to the Orange Toss, the God of Prosperity will be going around the mall, giving out red packets with cash, vouchers and tickets for The Mines Cruise. There are over RM28,000 in prizes up for grabs, so keep an eye out for good old Caishen. What’s more, a surprise celebrity guest is showing up for the festival. Start making your guesses about who it is.
Performances planned

Other activities will also be available for celebrants, such as a performance by lion dancers, a live band and a face-changing opera performer. Flash mobs and pop dances are also planned, as is a 24 Festive Drums performance.
Food and market

For those looking to spend angpow money, there will be food trucks and a Riverside Market for you to visit. And to add to the festive mood, visitors are encouraged to wear hanfus to the festival. So make sure to dress your best and hope for the best when you throw your orange.
