If you’re a soup lover, Confirm Sedap is the spot for you! It’s all anyone can talk about! The lamb soup is particularly fragrant, especially the lamb soup! With gorgeous chunks of lamb that are so tender, you can practically break it apart with just a gentle press of the spoon! But try also their no-frills chicken soup, which has just enough spices, but not too many, for that warming touch! Best had hot!

Middle Eastern food! Yipee! Who doesn’t love a bit of hummus and mandi rice? Rice cooked just perfectly, so it’s fluffy and yet still holds its shape and form! Especially when paired with some good old marinated and spiced chicken, who could ever resist? Marinated for hours before it goes in the tandoor, we highly recommend this pairing! Try also the cheesy, gooey and delectably sweet kunafa! We don’t recommend getting the kunafa for takeaway though, so have it while you dine out!

Perfect al-dente pasta in savoury, totally slurpable sauces! Offering a comfortable dining experience with ample seating and space, their pasta menu varies from local, Thai, Korean, and Western options! They even serve delectable rice dishes for those not of the noodle-inclined! The carbonara is highly recommended, especially with that juicy grilled chicken thigh on top! And if you’re still feeling hungry, simply order their Spicy Korean Chicken Rice, you’re at the restaurant after all!

Built into a residential home from the 90s, D Luboq Cafe is known for its lontong! They start making it from scratch every morning, that gorgeous kuah just practically glistening, that’s the flavour winking at you, tempting you to take a sip! If lontong isn’t your style though, their Nasi Lemak with Salted Egg Chicken is sure to take your taste buds on a trip! One of the best budget-friendly dining restaurants!

Ah, nasi kandar. Every Malaysian’s favourite economical lunch option, and every Malaysian’s favourite taste of nostalgia! Of course, Penang nasi kandar is one of the kings of cuisine, so who are we to argue against it? While you’re there, be sure to ask for kuah banjir, that’s the BEST way to have nasi kandar! And the side dishes that they serve are not only affordable, but also pretty dang tasty too! Our favourite would have to be the ayam goreng, it’s simply a classic! Also, the service here is friendly and super accommodating!

6. Ulala Bowl by Unknown

Here’s a unique twist for this season, poke bowls! Though not traditional, Ulala Bowl by Unknown is known to have poke bowls that are not only delicious but also nutritious! And all the better, everybody can enjoy them! The Smokey-Quack, a poke bowl with smoked duck, is a savoury, meaty bomb that’s still light enough all whilst leaving you wholly fulfilled! And if you’re someone of the vegan persuasion, never fear! There are plenty of plant-based options for you to pick from, and they’re still filled with healthy protein! Though diners often order from this spot for takeout, we prefer coming to the bar to watch the courteous staff build our bowls from scratch!

7. Pasta Port

Said to be the best pasta in Penang, options here are limitless! A cosy little spot to dine out at, don’t be fooled, as the restaurant can still host a ton of people! The pasta here comes in adorable little takeaway boxes, even if you’re eating at the restaurant, giving it that old-school American takeaway vibe! No matter what mood you might be in though, a surefire choice here would be the mac n cheese! Super savoury, creamy, and delish without being too jelak! Considering it’s one of many budget-friendly dining restaurants, this spot has some seriously atas flavour!

Let’s face it. Nasi kandar spots are bountiful in this part of town. But honestly? Restoran Hameediyah will forevermore stand out amongst the crowd! And the reason? The kuah, of course! Cooked with love (and hours upon hours of labour), the curries and kuah at Restoran Hameediyah are unbeatable! Of course, that’s not all that goes into nasi kandar of course, you need some sides! And the sotong goreng is a side that CANNOT be missed out on! Crispy, fresh, perfectly bouncy to the tooth, it’s got to be magic!
