There are two kinds of passengers on a flight. Those who expect in-flight meals to be average, and those who end up pleasantly surprised. We used to fall in the first group. That is, until we flew with Batik Air.
When the meal trays started coming out, the first thing we noticed was the aroma. Warm spices, sambal, something that smelled properly Malaysian. The scent filled the cabin long before it was our turn to be served, a promising hint to us that this wasn’t just another quick meal at 30,000 feet.
Here’s the thing: Batik Air isn’t a budget airline, and it doesn’t pretend to be premium either. It sits comfortably in between, the kind of flight that feels calm and quietly put together. The service is steady, the cabins feel organised, and everything seems to move with a sense of care. What stood out most for us, though, was how much effort goes into the food.
Genuinely delicious in-flight meals
We were super curious about what the food would taste like. Was it going to be impressive, or just another typical in-flight meal to tide us over till touch down? We weren’t disappointed. The menu aims to please. Every dish looks well thought out, and more importantly, tastes like something made to be enjoyed, not merely served.

Among all the meals, these were our clear favourites. The Biryani stood out for how rich and soft it was, each bite carrying a depth of flavour. The hints of spice and aroma showed that the chicken and lamb were properly marinated, this was not your basic biryani. Batik Air serves three types: Lamb Biryani, Chicken Biryani, and a Vegetarian Biryani for those who prefer a meat-free option. The fact that they offer this range says a lot about their commitment to variety.

But we really have to address the Idli with Lamb Curry. It’s comforting and cosy, paired with creamy curry that felt like breakfast from a small Indian café. Personally, this is the first time we’ve seen an authentic Indian dish served on a plane, and it did not let us down. We wish they served this Idli on every other airline because it’s that good.
For those who prefer something Western, there’s Creamy Chicken Carbonara, Penne Arrabiata, and Chicken Pizza. Asian options include Teriyaki Chicken with sautéed vegetables, Fried Rice with Chicken, and new menu items like Stir-Fried Bee Hoon with Chicken and Fried Kuey Teow with Chicken Satay.
If you’re in the mood for something light, there’s a sweet treat like a Chocolate Muffin. Even kids get their own options, which we’re sure parents will appreciate.

Comfort that makes a difference
Good food matters most when you can actually enjoy it comfortably, and Batik Air makes that part easy. We noticed that even the lighting adds to the ambience. And we have to give credit where it’s due to the crew. They served each meal with care and attentiveness. From neatly arranged napkins and cutlery to cheerful smiles, every detail feels considered and makes a big difference when compounded.
Honest value for the experience
We also got a peek into Batik Air’s Economy Class, and it gave us a tinge of envy. The experience began even before boarding, with a special EV car to bring you straight to the aircraft. Inside, the seats were spacious and comfortable, with compartments to stay organised. It felt exclusive and private, perfect for longer journeys.
Batik Air offers three fare tiers under its Economy Class: Super Saver, Value, and Flexi with each providing different benefits and flexibility. Regardless of the fare type, passengers can enjoy the same comfortable seating and pleasant flying experience across all routes.

Currently from Penang, Batik Air operates direct flights only to Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur International (KLIA). In December, the airline will launch direct services from Penang to Singapore and Medan. It is also introducing new routes from Subang in December, including Singapore, Jakarta, Johor and Langkawi.
If you’re flying Economy Flexi, your fare already includes baggage, meals, and flexibility to make changes when needed. The lowest fare for Flexi starts from RM169. For those who prefer to travel light, the Super Saver option is ideal. It doesn’t include baggage or meals, so you can save more, with fares starting from RM69. Meals and baggage can still be pre-purchased based on your travel needs.

Batik Air is based at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) with an additional hub in Subang. The airline currently flies to more than 60 destinations across 20 countries, connecting travellers to key cities across Asia and beyond.
Batik Air reminded us that airplane food doesn’t have to be bland or forgettable. The flavours, service, and attention to detail come together to create a dining experience that feels sincere and thoughtfully Malaysian. For Batik Air, we are more than happy to be among the passengers that look forward to in-flight meals, instead of just eating to get through the flight.
