Whether one has a stack of daily jewellery that they put on every day or a handful of timeless pieces that they wear on occasion, jewellery acts as a cherry on top to pull an outfit together. An integral part of these pieces is the ability to switch up your choices day-to-day.

However, in recent years, the trends have seen the rise of clasp-free jewellery, also known as permanent jewellery.

What is permanent jewellery?

The rise of permanent jewellery has raised many eyebrows due to the allusion of permanence in its name. At its core, it has been around for a long time, usually from historically religious and social status based backgrounds. The jewellery type can’t be removed on one’s own.

Permanent jewellery has taken a sophisticated twist, consisting of thin bracelets that are made of gold or silver. These chains are then welded directly onto one’s wrist, ankle, or neck. It creates a seamless look with a satisfying zap during the process.

The first permanent jewellery store in Malaysia

While the trend took off internationally, Malaysians were only able to watch from afar as others got the experience of finding their forever bands. But a pioneer of this trend in Malaysia began with none other than Azloft.

Azloft first launched their permanent jewellery line in early 2023, self-proclaiming themselves as the first ever store to bring this concept to Malaysia.

Originally, the shop operated exclusively online while having pop-up shops across KL and PJ. In October 2023, the brand opened their doors to their first flagship store located in MyTOWN Shopping Centre.

This shop has quickly become the one-stop spot to get permanent accessories with friends, family or even one’s significant other. Many flock to the store to get their memories physically fixed onto them.

However, this has brought questions of the consequences of getting these “forever” jewelleries with people who may not be so permanent in your life. Or what if you need to get a medical examination or procedure done and you need to get all jewelleries removed?

Are you actually stuck with permanent jewellery for life?

The short answer is no.

While these jewelleries seem to be the tattoos of accessories, rest assured that the pieces can be removed. However, the removal process is complicated as there isn’t the basic hook and clasp that normal bracelets, necklaces and anklets have; proper tools are required for this.

A major concern from the public is the need to remove accessories in the case of an emergency. However, Azloft clarifies, the pieces can be removed with nail clippers or sharp scissors if need be. They can then be reattached by welding at Azloft.

Thus, it really is not as ‘permanent’ as the name suggests.

Would you get permanent jewellery?

Azloft offers minimalistic designs that one can choose as your everyday jewellery. These designs range from RM169 up to RM529 for the base chain. Zappers (what people who get zapped for permanent jewelley are called) can also choose from a handful of charms to add-on to their accessories to customise their chain.

The simplicity of these accessories can create a perfect foundation for other eccentric and elaborate accessories, or be a chic everyday statement piece.

While the cost of the accessories toe on the pricier side, many make the choice to get it with their loved ones as a physical representation of the bond. Much like getting matching tattoos with your best friends, these permanent jewelleries have the same connotations to them.

Would you consider getting it with yours?
