August is here! It’s Merdeka Month and many Malaysians are likely looking forward to the holiday at the month’s end. So, why not take the opportunity to visit some new restaurants that opened just this August?
Without further ado, here are ten places in and around the Klang Valley to check out with your makan buddies this August:
Japanese Classics
- By Age 18

People with celiac disease will be pleased to have an udon place perfect for them. By Age 18 is founded by a Japanese father whose son had similar health issues. Thus, he strived to find an udon that his son could eat, which emerged in the form of rice-based udon.
In addition to being gluten-free, By Age 18 is also vegan-friendly. Must-tries include the Bukkake Udon, Tempura Udon and Curry Udon. Their drinks are also worth checking out, especially the Mango Matcha Latte and Strawberry Matcha Latte.

- Sushi Bell

Another omakase place in KL? Sounds perfect! This one is one the 11th floor of the TSLAW Tower, giving diners a good look at the surrounding city. Surprisingly, the omakase experience here is quite affordable, at RM168.
The omakase menu normally consists of aged fish, seasonal bites and curated sushi. You can also check out the a la carte menu, which has rice bowls on the way. There is also a lounge and bar if you want to drink your troubles away.

- Sando-Icchi

Publika has yet another place for foodies to check out in the form of Sando-Icchi. This is the best place to introduce yourself to the concept of Japanese beef sandwiches. These thick pieces of bread are stuffed with chunks of beef before being sliced perfectly into halves.
At present, there are six options on their menu. The star of the show has to be the Big-Size Felix Steak Sando, in any case. Fitting snugly into one’s palm, this Australian beef sandwich sells out quickly, so be warned!
Coffee spots
- Dirty Coffee

To be perfectly clear, Dirty Coffee is a sanitary cafe. It is Subang Jaya’s newest hangout spot, with about 50 drinks on its menu. It has a minimalist look, relying more on its drink selection to attract customers.
Strawberry lovers will find themselves at home here, with the many strawberry drinks available. These include strawberry hojicha latte and strawberry matcha latte. Do check out the Spanish and coconut lattes as well.
Address: 37-3, Jalan USJ 9/5s, USJ, 47620 Subang Jaya, Selangor

A car-themed cafe perfect for motorheads, it is also a car gallery, housing Porsche RWB, MINI and GT3 RS models. This Seapark establishment lets you have a good cup of coffee while admiring these models of autoengineering beauty.
Must-tries include the dirty matcha, which has chocolate mixed in, and the creamy hojicha.

Quirky lil places
- General Store Cafe

This Kuchai Lama cafe is based on the look of a typical American general store. It is both a coffee shop and a bakery, with artworks and vinyl records giving the place a rather quirky look. Plug points are aplenty here, so students and workers will fit right at home.
In terms of tasty offerings, General Store has several drinks worth checking out. These include coffees and matchas, plus mocktails like the Longan Osmanthus and Pomegranate Cider. A micro-bakery is on the way to provide pastries to accompany one’s drinks.
Address: 1-3, Dataran Loka, Jalan Kuchai Lama, Taman Continental, 58200 Kuala Lumpur, WP Kuala Lumpur
- Eternyl Vinyl Café

Vinyls really are coming back into fashion, aren’t they? Seapark has a new cosy cafe which is also likely to be Malaysia’s first vinyl listening cafe. Literally, for a small fee, you can pay to listen to as many vinyls as you want for 90 minutes.
When you are not humming to classic tunes at one of the 15 listening stations, you can check out the small menu of drinks and cakes. It is a simple but sufficient menu, with cappuccinos, hojicha lattes and burnt cheesecake.
Address: 7-1, Jalan 21/11b, Sea Park, 46300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor
- Petite Lab Patisserie

Instagrammers should consider making a pit stop at this newly opened dessert shop. The offerings here are often too pretty to eat, but you will likely not resist eating them for long. So, snap away and then munch away.
Must-tries include their season-themed desserts like Summer, which has a feuilletine base topped with chantilly cream and mascarpone, and Spring, a bite-sized pastry stuffed with passionfruit compote and matcha cream.
Address: 20A, 1st Floor, Jalan 22/49, Seksyen 22, 46300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor
Bars & clubs
- B.E.D

While you may be tempted to snooze here after work, this bar-cum-club is probably best left for partying purposes. Located at The Exchange TRX, it has a dual identity. It is a brunch and coffee spot by day, but turns into a bar at night.
If you have some moves to show off, B.E.D has a dancefloor ready for the occasion. And when you are not stretching your legs, there are plenty of cocktails and snacks to keep you occupied.

- Awesome Wang

Stop giggling, dammit. This is the latest addition to the foodie haven that is SS2. Awesome Wang is specialised in a curious pairing of Teochew noodles and cocktails. If you love beef noodles, you are in for a treat.
Must-tries include the Smoky Dashi Beef Noodle Soup, which uses Black Angus beef. As for refreshments, you can actually fully customise a cocktail based on your preferences. It is a great way to experiment with new flavours without putting in any work.
Address: 31-1, Jalan SS2, SS 2, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor
