Everybody says you’ve got to have Sarawak Laksa when in Sarawak, that much is obvious. But what about soto? Kolo mee? The options are endless, and it can be a little difficult to choose which noodles to pick. But huzzah, we’ve found the answers, and compiled a list of 8 must try noodle spots in Kuching/Kota Kinabalu!

1. Restoran Foh Chuan

Though famous for their varied porky dishes, their Restoran Foh Chuan is definitely a crowd-pleaser. The darling of returning travelers and locals alike, this spot is a one-stop shop to flavourtown! Try their Hakka Mee topped with char siew for that unctuous, rich mouthful as you bite and chow down on chewy noodles, as a side dish, we definitely recommend the roasted pork, just be sure to get there before 11:30am, as it usually sells out by then!

2. Life Cafe

Paying homage to the long and illustrious history of Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce Road, Life Cafe has set up their Train Terrace here to reminisce on the good ol’ days with a refreshing cup of tea. There are 4 options of noodle types at Life Cafe, round and wide, and for the health conscious folks, spinach and sweet potato vermicelli. Warm and hearty, soto is a crowd-favourite of Malaysians. And it’s no surprise that Soto Satu in turn, with their spectacular bowls of soto mee and other delicacies, are a crowd-favourite too! Soto Satu serves up affordable and tasty meals. Their soto tastes rather different from others of its kind, as it’s quite herbaceous and comes with lots of beef! 4. Signature Madam Tang’s Cafe

A cosy atmosphere, good music, friendly company and delicious food, who could ask for more? Signature Madam Tang’s Cafe excels in all of those qualities and more, serving authentic Malaysian cuisine. 5. Subree Kopitiam

A Muslim-owned business, Subree Kopitiam is extremely famous for their Kolo Mee, and it’s certainly no surprise why. Their Mee Kolok Ayam is a crowd favourite, flavourful and springy noodles fill your mouth with the flavour of perfectly cooked chicken, and slathered in their in-house secret sauce, it’s one of the best Kolo Mee’s in town! If you’re looking for something beefier, try their Mee Kolok Daging, super tender and juicy! Be sure to also check out their Mee Sapi, topped with crispy onion!

6. Auntie Jun’s Marudi Kolo Mee

Serving Sarawakian cuisine, Auntie Jun’s Marudi Kolo Mee is a total must-try if you’re in Kota Kinabalu. It’s a local-favourite, and you can often see crowds swarming around the restaurant in peak hours (so be sure to come a little earlier). Their kolo mee is porky, and the oil-covered noodles are savoury and just the right texture, not too al-dente but just toothsome enough to be satisfying. Other than their famous kolo mee, their kuay chap is super intense and flavourful! It comes with braised pork belly, intestines, tau pok, eggs, and more!

Blazing in with our seventh entry, is Real Mee Sup KB! Of course, their Mee Sup KB is the must try here, and oh my gosh is it good. Despite its clear and translucent appearance, the soup is an absolutely banging addition to the thin noodles that soak up all of that delicious savoury broth. Also give their Mihun Sup KB a try, it comes with a huge portion of chicken breast, and they’ll even give you more fried onions upon request!
